After Christmas College Basketball PicksJosh Bailey
Great matchups abound this week on the college hardcourt. Who wins it when defensive specialist teams #12 Virginia and #10 Louisville clash at the KFC Yum! Center on Wednesday, Dec. 28? What’s going to happen on Friday, Dec. 30 when #18 Arizona battles California? On Saturday, Dec. 31, two Top 10 Big East teams in top-ranked Villanova and #9 Creighton throw down. Can the Blue Jays upset the Wildcats?
After Christmas College Basketball Picks
#12 Virginia at #10 Louisville
When: Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: KC Yum! Center, Louisville, KY
Analysis: Louisville beat rival Kentucky at home in their last game. The win could work against them as Virginia, unlike Kentucky, plays the same crazy tough defense that Louisville plays.
Virginia is ranked first in points allowed at 47.2. The Cavaliers allow 34.1% from the field. They shoot 49.8% from the field while averaging close to 70 points per game. It’s going to be awfully tough for Louisville to outwork Virginia on defense.
I like Virginia to pull off the straight up moneyline upset win in this game. Don’t be surprised if Louisville has a letdown game after beating Kentucky in their last.
#18 Arizona at California
When: Friday, Dec. 30 at 11:00 pm ET
Where: Haas Pavilion, Berkeley, CA
TV: ESPN 2
Analysis: Cal barely lost to Virginia 52 to 56 in their last game. They take on Arizona on Friday, Dec. 30. The Wildcats have a much better offense than what Virginia has. Arizona has a terrific front line, which means that they can dump the ball inside, and great outside shooters. They also have multiple players that can drive to the basket.
Cal forward Ivan Rabb is great. The problem for Cal is that they don’t have the guards that can stick with Arizona’s guards. Plus, even if Rabb is as good as he usually is, Arizona’s frontcourt players are decent defenders.
The Wildcats should win and cover in this game.
#1 Villanova at #9 Creighton
When: Saturday, Dec. 31 at 1:00 pm ET
Where: CenturyLink Center, Omaha, NE
Analysis: Villanova travels to Omaha, NE on Dec. 31 to take on Creighton. The Big East, once again, is loaded with great teams. Two of those great teams are 1 ranked Villanova and 9 ranked Creighton. Undefeated Villanova looks dead set on repeating as College Basketball National Champions.
Creighton is undefeated as well. The Blue Jays haven’t faced any team as good as Villanova. But, I love how they’re averaging around 90 points per. Villanova struggled with Notre Dame, the last great shooting team that they faced.
Creighton shoots 52% from the field and over 45% from three. I’m calling the upset. I believe that Creighton beats Villanova straight up in this one.
