Cincinnati Will Cover the Spread If
They can get the frontline going.
Cincinnati could have a decent advantage over SMU along their frontline. This is especially true with 6’ 10”, 230lb, forward Octavius Ellis who shoots over 58% from the field. Ellis only averages 9.4 points and 7 boards per game, but he scored 14 points and grabbed 14 boards versus ECU in the Bearcats’ last, a 46 to 50 loss.
The loss doesn’t mean that the Bearcats don’t continue to feed Ellis the rock. What it means is that the rest of the front line, including Jermaine Sanders who only scored 3 points and grabbed 2 boards versus ECU, steps it up. Sanders and Elliot could really disrupt SMU’s offense if they excel on the blocks and in the paint.
SMU Will Cover the Spread If
The inside/out game with Yoenick Moreira and Ryan Manuel thrives.
Center Yoenick Moreira is 6’ 11” and 220lbs. He’s not extremely large, but he’s got excellent moves as evidenced by his 11.9 points per game average. In fact, Moreira has scored in double-figures in 4 straight Mustang games. Moreira is also averaging 6.6 rebounds per game and hasn’t averaged less than 6 in 4 straight contests.

But, Moreira can’t do it alone. Ellis and Sanders will be aware of Moreira’s strengths, which mean that for SMU to cover the spread in this matchup, guard Ryan Manuel is going to have to play great again. While Nic Moore leads the team in points per game at 14.5 and assists per game at 5.4, it’s the off guard, Manuel, that does all of the little things that makes SMU tough.
Manuel scored 20 points, dished 4 assists and grabbed 4 boards in the Mustangs’ last game, a 75 to 64 win over UCF. While Moore is 5’ 9”, Manuel is 6’ 4”. He presents a tough matchup for a lot of teams and will have to step it up along with Moreira for SMU to cover the spread against the Bearcats.
