The 2015-16 college basketball season is just starting to heat up. This weeks’ best bets in NCAA hoops revolve around some teams that are starting to gel and other teams that are already in the top echelon.
Below are my best ATS, Over/Under and moneyline wagers for this week in college basketball.
College Basketball ATS Betting Picks
Boston College at 23 Providence
When: Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 4:00 pm ET
Analysis: Providence backs up their 6 and 1 straight up record with a 5 and 3 overall record. The Friars are 2 and 2 ATS at home to start the week. The last time that Providence played Boston College, they lost to the Eagles 60 to 69. That’s probably not going to happen in this game. BC is 1 and 4 against the spread and 3 and 5 ATS overall.
Fresno State at #19 Arizona
When: Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 6:00 pm ET
Analysis: Arizona’s terrific come from behind 68 to 63 road win over Gonzaga on Dec. 5 was spectacular. It was a sign that Sean Miller’s squad is gelling. That could spell doom for the rest of the Pac 12 this season. Arizona battles Fresno State. This is the first time that these 2 teams have met since 2007. Fresno State is a decent 6 and 2 straight up. They lost by only 5 to Oregon as a +11.5 road dog on Nov. 30. Fresno State guard Marvell Harris is 6’ 4” and 210 lbs. He’s averaging 19 points and over 5 assists per game. Harris should keep this game below the number.
Pick: Fresno State
Arizona State at #1 Kentucky
When: Saturday, Dec. 12 at 12:15 pm ET
Analysis: It looked like Kentucky was going to win against the last Pac 12 team that they faced. But, the Wildcats couldn’t stop UCLA. Kentucky lost their first game of the season 87 to 77. Kentucky will look to bounce back against Arizona State this Saturday. Kentucky is only 2 and 6 against the spread to start the week. Arizona State is likely to be a huge under played dog meaning that Kentucky will have to blow out the Sun Devils by quite a few points in order to cover the spread. That won’t happen. Kentucky just doesn’t cover a lot of spreads.
Pick: Arizona State
College Basketball Game Total Over/Under Betting Picks
Oregon State at #4 Kansas
When: Saturday, Dec. 12 at 5:00 pm ET
Analysis: The Rock Chalk Kansas Jayhawks average 90.9 points per game. That ranks 3rd in all of college basketball. The Jayhawks shoot a very good 50.7% from the field. They shoot 45.5% from behind the three-point line. Due to Kansas’ presence this looks like an over game. But, Oregon State only allows opponents to shoot 37.6% from the field and less than 30% from the three point line. Expect this game to go under.
Iowa at #5 Iowa State
When: Thursday, Dec. 10 at 4:30 pm ET
Analysis: Here’s another game that looks like an over contest. Only in this matchup, the over should have it easily. 6 and 1 straight up Iowa is averaging close to 84 points per game. The Hawkeyes are running and gunning on the court. Iowa State is one of the top scoring teams in the nation. The Cyclones average close to 88 points per game. Neither one of these teams is going to want to slow it down. It’s going to be survival of the fittest on Thursday in this rivalry game.
UCLA at #13 Gonzaga
When: Saturday, Dec. 12 at 7:00 pm ET
Analysis: Gonzaga had a 10 point lead over Arizona before scoring only 25 points in the second half and losing 63 to 68 at home on Dec. 5. The Zags will look to beat another Pac 12 team at home this Saturday when they battle UCLA. Coach Steve Alford got a signature win last week. The Bruins upset Kentucky. It might be tough for UCLA to repeat the win over Gonzaga at home. But, who cares? When it comes to the spread, neither one of these teams is going to run and gun. Expect an under game.
College Basketball Straight Up Moneyline Betting Picks
Dayton at #16 Vanderbilt
When: Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 1:00 pm ET
Analysis: Both Dayton and Vanderbilt have 5 and 1 records to start the week. Dayton’s lone loss was a 61 to 90 home beat down at the hands of Xavier. Dayton is a better team than what they showed in that loss. Vanderbilt’s only loss was 63 to 70 to Kansas. Whose loss was worse? Dayton’s, of course, but that doesn’t mean that the Flyers couldn’t pull an upset over Vandy on the road this Wednesday. Back Dayton.
Florida at #3 Michigan State
When: Saturday, Dec. 11 at 1:00 pm ET
Analysis: Michigan State is 5 and 1 against the spread this season. The Spartans sure look like a team that will challenge for the Final Four in 2016. But, Florida is no slouch of a team. The Gators are 6 and 1 straight up with their only loss being to the Purdue Boilermakers. Purdue is much bigger on the inside than Florida is. Michigan State is more guard oriented. That should play into Florida’s game, strong zone defense and patient offense.
#17 Cincinnati at #12 Xavier
When: Friday, Dec. 11, at 2:30 pm ET
Analysis: One of the better games of the week pits AAC ranked Cincinnati against Big East ranked Xavier. Cincinnati plays unbelievable defense. The Bearcats allow 57.5 points, less than 36% from the field and barely over 34% from the three-point line. Xavier’s defense isn’t as good as Cincinnati’s. Then again, Xavier has played against much tougher teams on paper. The Bearcats D will keep them in the game. That’s what you look for when betting on the moneyline in college hoops, underdogs with a shot.
