It’s a little known fact that the major programs make for bad takes in college basketball parlay picks for the simple reason that everyone is gunning after them. That’s why you have to go slightly off the grid to find some of the better values on the open market. Enter the No. 21 Virginia Cavaliers and the Stanford Cardinal…
#21 VIRGINIA CAVALIERS -13.5 over Boston College Eagles (7pm EST)
You probably didn’t know Virginia was ranked, but if you love winning money then you’re well aware of how dominant the Cavs have been against the spread. They have been dynamite in the ACC with a conference best 12-6 ATS record, and have been a nice, hidden gem when building college basketball parlay picks.
The way Virginia wins basketball games is also really enticing. They’re a fantastic defensive team that ranks second in the country with just 55.5 points allowed, and they generate a stingy perimeter that’s allowed just 37.8-percent shooting against. Part of that is the quality of their competition but the results are stone cold. Virginia has faced recent double digit spreads of -16.0 and -12.0 during an eye catching 8-1 SU and 9-0 ATS run over their last nine games. And that one loss was against Duke in a 65-69 heart breaker.
If you’re in the dark about Boston College, then don’t sweat it. This team is 6-13 ATS this season, and on top of that, they’re 6-15 SU. They’re bad. Really, really bad. And they’re 1-7 ATS when traveling. The Eagles have started to pull up their socks a bit with a strange 2-4 SU and 4-2 ATS gallop in the last little while, but it’s not enough for me to feel comfortable against a top-10 defense in my own college basketball parlay picks.
Stanford Cardinal +3.5 over CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS (9pm EST)
Confidence has a lot to do with how well a team plays, and no team in the country is riding higher than the California Golden Bears who handed Arizona their first defeat of the season in a 60-58 thriller. They should become a bit of a public play now, but it’s important to remember what happened before their upset over the top team in the country. California went just 0-3 SU and ATS prior to that massive win.
Stanford is a much different team overall, and they’re simply more reliable which is why they’ve found themselves stacked in my college basketball parlay picks throughout the season. At 5-2 SU and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games, they are one of the best off-the-radar plays in college basketball betting. Stanford is 12-6-1 ATS on the season.
So while California enjoys their moment in the spotlight, we should keep in mind that this team is still 11-10 ATS overall this year. I’m not saying that they’re bad because they are one of the better Pac-12 teams out there, but that isn’t saying much. Stanford has found a way to rise to the occasion, and are also 4-2 ATS when traveling this year.
This matchup usually favors the home team and the favorite, who are both 9-3 ATS in the last 12 meetings between Stanford and California, but the Cardinal defense here will throw California off their rockers and send them back in to a slump. I don’t trust Cal yet. They could turn me, but one upset – no matter who it was against – isn’t enough to make me a believer. At least not when a big payout is involved with my college basketball parlay picks.
