College Basketball Betting Cheat Sheet Jan 4-10

College Football wraps up in a week with the National Championship game which means we can shift gears to college basketball and the timing is perfect with conference play starting in earnest this week.

The Big East and ACC have their usual group of terrific matchups. In fact, both Villanova and Duke show up twice on my first college hoops betting cheat sheet of the year. Another game I’m looking at pits ranked Cincinnati versus ranked SMU. On Saturday is a huge game in the Big Ten between No. 4 ranked Maryland and Wisconsin.

Keep reading for my expert ATS, Over/Under, and Moneyline college hoops betting picks for the week!

College Basketball ATS Free Picks

Seton Hall at No. 16 Villanova
When: Wednesday, Jan. 6 at 4:00 pm ET

Analysis: Villanova starts the week on a 4 game winning streak. No win was more impressive than beating Xavier 95 to 64 on Dec. 31. The Wildcats are a stunning 6 and 1 at home against the spread while being 8-4-1 ATS overall. Villanova should have no trouble covering the spread versus a Seton Hall team that they beat 80 to 54 last February and who hasn’t improved all that much from that time.

Pick: Villanova

No. 22 Cincinnati at No. 17 SMU
When: Thursday, Jan. 7 at 4:00 pm ET

Analysis: Is it me or has the AAC really excelled in team sports lately?  Both Memphis and Houston were top squads during the college football season. Now, Cincinnati and SMU are both ranked in the Top 25. SMU has a dynamite defense, the Mustangs allow 38% from the field and around 62 points per game from their opponents that they back up with an 82 points per game 52% shooting from the field offense. Oh, that coach, Larry Brown, the one that has won an NCAA and an NBA title, is on SMU’s bench.

Pick: SMU

Michigan at No. 14 Purdue
When: Thursday, Jan. 7 at 4:00 pm ET

Analysis: Michigan is 12 and 3 to start the week. Purdue is 13 and 2. The problem for Wolverine fans is that they have a defense that allows 40.3% from the field and close to 35% from behind the three-point line. Purdue’s defense is ranked first in the nation in field goal percentage allowed at 34.8%. Opponents shoot less than 29% from behind the arc against the Boilermakers. Purdue also holds opponents to less than 60 points on average per game.

Pick: Purdue

College Basketball Game Total Over/Under Picks

No. 15 Duke at Wake Forest
When: Wednesday, Jan. 6 at 4:00 pm ET

Analysis: Offensively, the Blue Devils are awesome. Duke shoots 47.9% from the field and 38.6% from behind the three-point line. The Dookies average 88.4 points per game. But Duke’s defense has been just okay this season. The D allows close to 70 points per game, 42.9% from the field, and 36% from the three-point line. Since Wake Forest’s defense is nothing to brag about, 44.4% from the field and 77 points allowed on average per match up, this game should go over.

Pick: Over

No. 5 Virginia at Georgia Tech
When: Saturday, Jan. 9 at 11:00 am ET

Analysis: Virginia’s defense isn’t as lock down as some believe it to be. Last season it was, but this season opponents are averaging 41.9% shooting from the field and 59.6 points per game. With that being written, a team hasn’t scored more than 70 on Virginia since Villanova scored 75 in an 86 to 75 Virginia win on Dec. 19. Georgia Tech averages 77 points per game. The Yellow Jackets will be lucky to hit the 55 mark against the Cavaliers.

Pick: Under

Florida State at No. 13 Miami FL
When: Saturday, Jan. 9 at 1:00 pm ET

Analysis: Miami can play any game that they need to play in order to win. If Miami needs to slow it down, the Hurricanes can do that. But, why worry about doing that when you face Florida State? The Seminoles allowed Ohio to score 81 points while they scored 90 in a win on Nov. 23. On Jan. 2, Clemson beat Florida State 84 to 75. This game should easily go over with both teams shooting, and scoring, at will.

Pick: Over

College Basketball Straight Up Moneyline Picks

No. 4 Maryland at Wisconsin
When: Saturday, Jan. 9 at 10:00 am ET

Analysis: This season’s Maryland team has played much better so far than this season’s Wisconsin team. But, Wisconsin showed on Jan. 2 that they may be turning things around. Although it was against Rutgers, the Badgers played their first complete game of the season. They held Rutgers to only 57 points while scoring 79 on their end. If Wisconsin has gelled, they can beat Maryland straight up in this. That’s especially true since the Badgers get the Terrapins on their court.

Pick: Wisconsin

No. 16 Villanova at No. 9 Butler
When: Sunday, Jan. 10 at 4:30 pm ET

Analysis: Both Villanova and Butler are legit Final Four contenders. Butler has the home court advantage, but Villanova has a huge edge with 6’ 11” Daniel Ochefu who towers over anybody in Butler’s front court. Expect the Wildcats to dump the ball into Ochefu and have Ochefu pass it back out after the double-team to any of Villanova’s awesome 3 starting guards: Josh Hart, Ryan Arcidiacono and Jalen Brunson. Go with Villanova.

Pick: Villanova
