The Creighton Bluejays went from being one of my automatic college hoops free picks to a pretty big stay-away play in a hurry. They’ve collected a polished 7-1 SU record over their last 8 games, but are just 3-5 ATS in those matchups. Overall, they’re still one of the best bets on the open market – and an excessively fun team to watch – but they’ll have their hands full against a strong home betting team like Xavier.
Doug McDermott remains the guy to watch for Creighton, and even if you’re not backing the Bluejays like all of us were earlier in the year. McDermott just dropped 29 points on Seton Hall, 25 on Marquette and a mind-numbing 39 points on Villanova. The guy’s legit. And comparisons to Adam Morrison are unfair – McDermott has more technical polish and a wider variety of weapons in his arsenal.
But will it be enough against for you to bet against Xavier? The last time these two teams met, Creighton won 95-89 but failed to cover as -8.5 home favorites in college hoops free picks. They’ll still have a hefty handicap as the road team, but it might not be worth backing either way. Xavier has shown an ability to keep up with Creighton on the scoreboard and are 10-4 ATS at home this season.
Xavier is actually an overlooked team in the Big East. Every other program in the conference is struggling to stay above .500 in the ATS column. But the Musketeers are a daring 16-10 ATS this season. The biggest issue? They’re 3-6 ATS in their last 9 games overall.
The Musketeers have a deep roster bolstered by talented players like Justin Martin and Semaj Christon but they’re just not worth riding right now. I understand that Creighton has been a very troubling bet in college hoops free picks lately, but with a soft line against a team that can’t seem to slow down McDermott, I trust Xavier even less.
