Duke Will Cover the 17-point Spread If
The Blue Devils can continue their hot shooting.
These two teams haven’t played each other since Feb. 25, 2014. In that matchup, even though Duke won the game 66 to 48, the Blue Devils weren’t all that impressive on offense. Duke shot only 38.7% from the field and a terrible 30.3% from behind the three-point line. The reason that Duke was able to cover the spread against VA Tech in that game is due to the fact that they took 60 shots from the field to Virginia Tech’s 47.
If this Duke team is even close to its averages on offense, the Blue Devils should cover the spread versus the Hokies. Duke is averaging 80.6 points per game off of 49.8% shooting. That’s what the Blue Devils’ averages are. How good is Duke’s offense? Jahlil Okafor sat out the Blue Devils’ last game versus Clemson and Duke scored 78 points while shooting 51.7% from the field in a 78 to 56 beat down.

Virginia Tech Will Cover the 17-point Spread If
Virginia Tech’s offense can get going.
In the last game versus the Dookies, VA Tech scored only 48 points yet they shot over 40% from the field against Duke. This season’s VA Tech team is eerily similar to last season’s in the sense that they take less shots than their opponents, by a wide margin, and don’t score a lot of points.

The Hokies haven’t broken the 54 point barrier in Virginia Tech’s last 3 games. Versus Clemson the Hokies took only 49 shots to the Tigers’ 57. VA Tech lost 54 to 75. Versus Miami-Florida the Hokies took 46 shots to the Hurricanes’51. VA Tech lost 52 to 76. Versus North Carolina State the Hokies could only manage 53 points in a 53 to 69 loss. Duke is going to score a lot of points. The only chance for Virginia Tech to cover the spread is for the Hokies to score more points, by a wide margin, than they have in their past 3 games.
