The early March Madness odds continue to be a waiting game because this particular college basketball season has been absolutely insane and jam packed with action. Which teams can you bet on to get hot in March? I like the four following schools, but it’s a longshot that has my attention at the very bottom of this article.
Kansas Jayhawks (+600 early odds to win NCAA Championship)
Despite some stumbling throughout the year, Kansas remains one of the biggest bets in early March Madness odds. There’s no reason for Kansas to boast 6-to-1 odds to win the national championship when they haven’t played consistently throughout the season. They might be the best team on paper, but they’re not playing like that on the hardwood. Obviously you can bet on this team to get hot in March because Embiid and Wiggins seem like players that will elevate their game to the next level when the pressure’s on but right now they’re not as convincing as we’d like them to be as betting commodities. Hell, they don’t even have the best early March Madness odds to take home the national title…
Florida Gators (+550 early odds to win NCAA Championship)
That honor goes to the Florida Gators who are coming off a rousing 69-59 demolition of the Kentucky Wildcats. The Gators have now moved in to the second position in the college basketball rankings, and seem to be on course to make some serious noise in both the SEC Championship and the big dance itself. I am a huge fan of this team because they boast the type of veteran experience and team dynamic that champions have needed in recent tournaments. They’re led by senior Patric Young, and have a deep team that relies on a bevy of athletic forwards. Florida can match up with anyone and continue to be undersold as a national title contender. With a price +550 to win the national championship, the Gators should be on your radar. They’re smoking right now and they should be just as hot in March.
Syracuse Orange (+600 early odds to win NCAA Championship)
The top ranked team in the country is undefeated Syracuse who are now an incredible 25-0 SU. This team just feels unbeatable, especially when they’re hitting half court shot game winners to keep their streak alive. Everything about Syracuse is for real and they’ve outright dominated the country all year long. They have a monumental rematch against Duke on the road this coming weekend, with a tune-up in their own building against Boston College this Wednesday. Syracuse dispatched the Blue Devils in overtime 91-89 earlier this month. Can they do it again? If they do, they’ll become the outright favorites to win the national title. It’s a deep field but a chip shot on Syracuse’s 6-to-1 odds is in order if you love Boeheim’s crew as much as you should.
Wichita State Shockers (+1000 early odds to win NCAA Championship)
They’re undefeated at 27-0, went to the Final Four last year and have been nothing but business this entire campaign. Last year, they literally and figuratively shocked the world when nobody saw them coming. This year they’ll have a big target on their backs, but can do themselves all sorts of favors by securing a one-seed. Their early March Madness odds seem like a steal at 10-to-1, but it’s also hard to really get behind Wichita State in the 2013-14 season when we haven’t seen them play that many big name programs. This is a much deeper year overall than in past seasons. I’m not sure how Wichita State stacks up to the deeper teams…but they’ve proven doubters wrong before and are well aware of what it takes to win out in the tournament.
Best Of The Rest
We still have some time before we get to kick back and enjoy the awesomeness that is March madness so there’s plenty of time to really dial in on your favorite teams. I’ve been telling people that the best thing to do is zero in on three or four teams that you really like for whatever reason and back them, even if you have a genuine rooting interest in a specific program. Defending champion Louisville has a great price at +1800 even though they aren’t nearly as dominant as they were last season with Gorgui Dieng leading the way. Aforementioned Duke has attractive +1200 odds as well, and you have to adore the way Jabari Parker has evolved. He might be the best player in the country.
That is, of course, unless you love Creighton at +2800 and the front runner for player of the year – Doug McDermott. The Bluejays just eviscerated Villanova (ranked sixth at the time) and have a talented and refined college senior bulldozing his way through the competition. He may not be projected to be a solid pro player, but at this level, McDermott is a force to be reckoned with and his Creighton Bluejays deserve your respect. In terms of longshots, I love the early March Madness odds of these upstart Bluejays.
