College Basketball Expert Picks Dec 12th-18th
Florida Atlantic Owls (3-5) vs Miami Hurricanes (7-2)
When: Friday, Dec. 16 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: Watsco Center – Coral Gables, FL
Analysis: This is about bizarre as this Florida Atlantic team just over a week ago lost to Hofstra and just under a week ago BEAT Ohio State for the Buckeyes 1st home loss of the year in overtime. Miami probably won’t have as tough a team as the Buckeyes, but the Owls are probably going to have their hands full.
The biggest problem Florida Atlantic is going to have is the shabby defense they have giving up all kinds of points to any kind of opponent. The Owls (WHO?) give up 72 points a game and since that is only 3 less than they score I would say the Cinderella story is over Carl Spackler.
Pick: Miami in a blowout
#15 Purdue Boilermakers (8-2) vs #21 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (9-1)
When: Saturday, Dec. 17 at 2:00 pm ET
Where: Bankers Life Fieldhouse – Indianapolis, IN
TV: ESPN2/WATCH ESPN
Analysis: Well Notre Dame finally lost a game, but it was to the No. 1 ranked and NCAA Hoops Odds favorite Villanova by 8 points last week. Their opponent Purdue also lost to Villanova but only by 3 points, but the Boilermakers have one other defeat to No. 11 ranked Louisville. This one could be tight.
Both teams are close enough in points scored and points scored against that I am calling that a wash. The fact that Purdue is playing better teams over the year is going to be the decision maker I think here. RPI rank is No. 34 for Purdue and No. 39 for the Irish, but Strength of Schedule tells a different story. The SOS for the Irish is a weak 117 while the SOS for the Boilermakers is a lot stronger at 54.
I think when I add the fact they have 2 of NCAA Basketball’s big guys in their center Isaac Haas at 7 foot 2 and their power forward Caleb Swanigan, this outcome has become very clear.
Pick: Purdue Boilermakers giving up to 5.5 points
Clemson Tigers (6-2) vs Alabama Crimson Tide (4-4)
When: Sunday, Dec. 19 at 3:00 pm ET
Where: Mizzou Arena, Columbia, MO
Analysis: I can only hope we have these same 2 teams in the NCAA Football Championship like last year for a rematch. In basketball, this appears to be fairly one-sided in favor of the soon to be FBS College Football Playoff champs Clemson Tigers.
The Tigers do have 2 losses this year, but they were to heavy hitters No. 11 Xavier and Oklahoma this year. The Crimson Tide has 4 losses, but those were to some teams more on the scrub level than club level like Dayton, Valparaiso, Texas and 24 Oregon.
The clincher for picking Clemson to win by double digits easily has to be Alabama’s weak points per game which is only 67.6 which ranks tied for 297th place. I wonder who 298th is – maybe a high school team.
Pick: Clemson to win by more than 12 points
