College Basketball Picks December 5th-11th

#19 Iowa State at Iowa
When:  Thursday, Dec. 8 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Iowa City, IA
TV: ESPN 2

Analysis: As is usually the case, the Iowa State Cyclones are scoring a ton of points. Iowa State averages 84 points per game off 46% shooting. The Cyclones also grab 46 rebounds per game. Iowa State is 5-2 to start the week. Their only losses were to Top 10 ranked Gonzaga and Cincinnati in overtime.

The reason that Gonzaga and Cincinnati beat Iowa State is because both the Zags and the Bearcats play a controlled, half-court, game. That’s not the case with the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Hawkeyes average 85.6 points per game while yielding 85 points per game.

If you try to run and gun with the Cyclones, you’re going to lose. Often, you’re going to badly lose. I think Iowa State can blow out the Hawkeyes on Thursday.

Pick: Iowa State

#2 Villanova vs Notre Dame
When:  Saturday, Dec. 10 at 12:00 pm ET
Where: Prudential Center, Newark, NJ
TV: CBS

Analysis: I wondered why Villanova wasn’t ranked in the Top 3 to start the season even though they returned both Kris Jenkins and Josh Hart. So far, the undefeated Wildcats appear more than capable of defending their NCAA Championship this season.

Hart leads Nova in points per game at 18. He leads the team in assists per game at 4. He also leads the team in rebounds per game at 6.5. Jenkins averages 14.5 points, 4 boards, and 2 assists per game. Mikal Bridges averages 10.5 points per while Jalen Brunson averages 11.6.

But as well as Villanova has been playing, Notre Dame is undefeated at 8-0. They’re in the lead in the ACC. The Irish has scored 91 points or more in their last 3 games to star the week. What’s impressive is that opponents are averaging only 62 points per game against Notre Dame.

Notre Dame might be favored in this game. I like the Irish to win straight up and to cover ATS. If they’re the dog, I like the Irish on the moneyline.

Pick: Notre Dame

#16 Arizona at Missouri
When:  Saturday, Dec. 10 at 12:00 pm ET<
Where: Mizzou Arena, Columbia, MO
TV: ESPN 2

Analysis: The Arizona Wildcats made a furious rally to only lose by 7 points to Gonzaga, 62 to 69, in their last game to start the week. It was a terrific showing by Arizona, who remains without arguably their best player in Allonzo Trier.

Whether Trier shows up or not at Mizzou Arena this Saturday, I don’t think it’s going to matter. Arizona is loaded this year with advanced freshman. Lauri Markkanen, Rawle Alkins, and Kobi Simmons have been great this season.

The three freshman make mistakes, but all 3 are too talented for a team like Missouri to handle. The Tigers barely beat Western Kentucky 59 to 56 in their last on September 3. On Nov. 28, Missouri lost 52 to 62 to the North Carolina Central Eagles. Mizzou just doesn’t have enough firepower to keep this one close.

Arizona should romp to an easy against the spread cover win on Saturday.

Pick: Arizona
