Georgia State vs Xavier March Madness Odds & Free PickJosh Bailey
If you haven’t fell in love with the 14th-seeded Georgia State Panthers then its time to check your pulse. This is a team that won’t quit that hustles for a coach any seasoned pro-hoops player would jump on to play for. But now they face the 6th-seeded and 6.5-point favorite Xavier Musketeers.
The Panthers stormed back in the last two and a half minutes against No. 3 Baylor shocking not only the Bears, but the whole nation. Bracket-busting junior guard R.J. Hunter drained a game-winning three-pointer from well behind the arc with 2.7 seconds remaining to stun Baylor. Hunter’s late game heroics capped off the incredible comeback after the Panthers trailed 56-44 with 2:54 remaining.
Many brackets had Xavier falling to Ole Miss, but the Musketeers made it clear in the early going that they brought their A game. Xavier led throughout, mostly by double digits, and advanced easily with a 76-57 victory.

Georgia State Will Cover the 6.5-point Spread If
Georgia State can get quick baskets and get back on D.
There is no way to knock Georgia State for its 57 to 56 upset victory over Baylor. What’s interesting is that Georgia State beat Georgia Southern 38 to 36 in the Sun Belt Championship game. But, before the victory versus Georgia Southern, the Panthers hung 83 on Louisiana-Lafayette in an 83 to 79 win.

To cover the spread versus Xavier, Georgia State is going to have to speed things up on the offensive end. Xavier is the type of team that plays excellent interior defense, meaning that they should be able to contain Georgia State in the half court. The Panthers will want to push the pace against a great defensive team like the Musketeers. If they don’t, they can’t expect lightning to strike twice. They got away with playing slow versus Baylor. It won’t happen versus Xavier.

Xavier Will Cover the 6.5-point Spread If
The Musketeers convert rebounds into points.
Georgia State out rebounds its opponents by an average of 2.1 boards per matchup, 32.5 to 30.4. Baylor out boarded Georgia State 39 to 21, but the Bears couldn’t take advantage of the rebounds.

If Xavier hopes to cover the spread, the Musketeers are going to have to convert rebounds into points. Xavier out rebounds its opponents 35.1 to 28.8. It’s likely that Xavier will grab more boards than Georgia State on Saturday. It’s also likely that the margin will be close to what Baylor did by grabbing 18 more total boards. But, will Xavier convert those rebounds into points, or will they fail at scoring enough to beat Georgia State? This is the problem if Xavier plays too slow in this matchup on Saturday. Xavier has an advantage in the half-court game, but if they don’t turn rebounds into points in transition, they could end up fighting to just beat the Panthers much less cover the spread.
