The 11th-ranked Iowa State Cyclones currently sit in second place in the tightly contested Big 12 and with eight games remaining until the end of the regular season, today’s tilt against the third-place and 21st-ranked Oklahoma Sooners will be an important game.
“They’re playing great basketball right now, so it’s going to be a heck of a challenge,” Cyclones coach Fred Hoiberg said of the Sooners. “It’s a big game for us. It’s a big game for them so it should be entertaining.”
The Sooners, who are 6.5 point favorites today, are 10-1 at home and are seeking their longest single-season win streak in conference play since taking the first 11 games in 2008-09 with national player of the year Blake Griffin.

Iowa State Will Cover the Spread If
The Cyclones can force Oklahoma into an up and down game.
Iowa State was terrific versus Oklahoma in the first matchup. Even though the Sooners held the Cyclones to only 37 points in the first half, Iowa State came out in the second half and lit up Oklahoma for 44 points and an 81 to 75 win.
— Cyclone Basketball (@CycloneMBB) February 8, 2015
The Sooners only average 72.4 points from 44.8% shooting per contest. Iowa State is at its best when its opponents are trying to keep up with it like what Oklahoma was doing in scoring 75 in the last matchup between the two. For Iowa State to cover the spread in this matchup, they’re going to have to speed up the game, get as many possessions as they can, and force the Sooners to take panicky shots.
Oklahoma Will Cover the Spread If
Oklahoma is patient on offense and gets back on defense.
The Sooners are at their best when they are only shooting the ball in transition when they have an advantage, playing tight defense, and putting their faith into the hands of Buddy Heild. Heild averages 17.7 points, 5.4 boards and 1.8 assists per game.
— Oklahoma Basketball (@OU_MBBall) February 9, 2015
He is the player that can best disrupt Iowa State because in addition to leading the team in scoring, Heild is very good at forcing turnovers and rebounding the basketball. Oklahoma will want to run the offense through Heild with the idea of Buddy being patient and then get back on defense should they miss a shot.
Unless the Sooners get back on defense, they could find themselves in trouble again versus Iowa State. It’s almost impossible to run with the Cyclones who are as good as any team in the nation at getting up and down the floor. Oklahoma tried those tactics in the last game and lost straight up even though they covered the spread by a single point. They need to try a different tactic versus the Cyclones on Monday to make sure that they cover the spread in the second matchup.
