Iowa Will Cover the 5-point Spread If

The Hawkeyes are able to control the paint.

Iowa was brilliant when beating Davidson 83 to 52 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Hawkeyes scored more points against Davidson than versus any other opponent this season save for 90 versus Hampton in Iowa’s first game of the season and 87 versus North Dakota State in Iowa’s second game of the season. It was a good time to get the offense going again. This is especially true since before beating Davidson, Iowa lost 58 to 67 to Penn State.

In order to cover the spread versus Gonzaga, Iowa is going to have to control the paint. They won’t be able to dominate the paint, Gonzaga’s front line is too good for them to do that, but controlling the paint should be enough for the Hawkeyes to cover the spread. Forward Aaron White played 35 minutes. He scored 26 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. He’s going to be counted on to lead the charge versus Gonzaga’s big men.

Iowa Projected March Madness Starting Lineup:

  • G Mike Gesell, 6-1, Jr., 7.1 ppg, 3.8 apg
  • G Jarrod Uthoff, 6-8, Jr., 12.2 ppg, 6.3 rpg
  • F Aaron White, 6-7, Sr., 15.9 ppg, 7.4 rpg
  • F Gabriel Olaseni, 6-10, Sr., 8.3 ppg, 4.8 rpg
  • C Adam Woodbury, 7-1, Jr. 6.8 ppg, 5.3 rpg
  • Coach: Fran McCaffery (fifth season)

Gonzaga Will Cover the 5-point Spread If

Gonzaga can play tough defense.

It took Gonzaga a while, but they finally broke open the game in the second half versus North Dakota State. The Bison fault a good battle, but Gonzaga’s inside game, and Kevin Pangos, were just too much. The Zags ended up winning by 10, 86 to 76. Gonzaga shot 51.7% from the field versus the Bison. They hit 30 out of 58 shots.

There’s no doubt that Gonzaga can score. The Zags will have guys all over the court on Sunday that can put the basketball into the hoop. The problem that reared its ugly head on Friday night has to do with Gonzaga’s defense. The Zags allowed North Dakota State to shoot 53.7% from the field. They allowed the Bison to shoot 47.6%, 10 out of 21, from behind the three-point line. If North Dakota State is able to shoot that well against Gonzaga’s defense, what will Aaron White and Iowa do?  Gonzaga has to step it up on the defensive end if they hope to win the game versus Iowa on Sunday much less cover the spread as the favorite.

Gonzaga Projected NCAA Tournament Starting Lineup:

  • G Kevin Pangos, 6-2, Sr., 11.6 ppg, 5.0 apg
  • G Gary Bell Jr., 6-1, Sr., 8.1 ppg, 2.5 rpg
  • F Byron Wesley, 6-4, Sr., 10.6 ppg, 5.0 rpg
  • F Kyle Wiltjer, 6-10, Jr., 16.6 ppg, 5.8 rp
  • C Przemek Karnowski, 7-1, Jr., 10.9 ppg, 5.8 rpg
  • Coach: Mark Few (16th season)

Final Score Prediction – Iowa Hawkeyes 76, Gonzaga Bulldogs 73
