LSU V NC State NCAA Tournament Betting Spread, ATS Pick & How To WatchJosh Bailey
The 9th-seeded LSU Tigers face the 8th-seeded and 2-point favorite NC State Wolfpack today in the round of 64 March Madness betting matchup.
LSU may have been the only team to challenge the top-ranked Kentucky Wildcats this season, falling 71-69 but covering the spread as a 10.5-point home underdog back on February 10. Since then, the Tigers have gone 5-3 both straight-up and against the spread, including an 81-78 road victory against the Arkansas Razorbacks as 7.5-point underdogs.

NC State played well down the stretch before losing to the Duke Blue Devils 77-53 as 8.5-point underdogs in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament. The Wolfpack had won six of seven SU and ATS prior to that setback, highlighted by a 58-46 victory against the North Carolina Tar Heels as nine-point underdogs on February 24.

LSU Will Cover the Spread If
The Tigers big-men dominate the paint.
LSU has one of the best inside tandems in all of basketball. 6′ 10" forward Jarell Martin averages 16.9 points and 9.2 boards per game. 6′ 8" forward Jordan Mickey averages 15.5 points and 9.8 boards per game. Those two players are one of the reasons that LSU almost upset Kentucky this season in a 69 to 71 loss. Mickey scored 16 and grabbed 7 boards. Martin scored 21 and grabbed 11 boards.
Yes, guard Keith Hornsby was very good versus Auburn in the SEC Conference Tournament. Hornsby scored 24 points, but LSU lost to Auburn 70 to 73 as a -10 point favorite. Hornsby has to shoot and he has to play well, but if he’s the guy that the Tigers lean on to beat NC State, LSU is going to be in trouble. Jordan Mickey scored 1 point in that game. Mickey and Martin have to dominate in order for LSU to cover the spread against NC State.

- G Keith Hornsby, 6-4, Jr., 13.2 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 2 apg
- G Jalyn Patterson, 6-0, Fr., 6.5 ppg, 2.6 rpg
- F Jarell Martin, 6-10, So., 16.9 ppg, 9 rpg
- F Jordan Mickey, 6-8, So., 16 ppg, 10 rpg

NC State Will Cover the Spread If
NC State’s guards keep the game outside.
For NC State to cover the spread against LSU, their guards have to dominate. NC State has a decent inside presence with Lennard Freeman and Abdul-Malik Abu. Freeman leads the team in rebounds per game at 5.6. But NC State’s best shot of covering the spread versus LSU is if their two excellent guards are dominating the game.
Anthony Barber leads the team in assists per game at 3.8. He is as fast to the basket as any player in college basketball. He can also shoot from behind the arc like he showed against Pittsburgh when scoring 34 points and draining 4 out of 5 from behind the arc. His backcourt mate is Trevor Lacey who leads the Wolfpack in scoring per game at 15.8 per. Like Barber, Lacey can shoot the three; he averages 39.8% from behind the arc. Lacey can also drive to the basket.
When both Barber and Lacey are playing well, NC State becomes one of the most dangerous teams in basketball. The Wolfpack beat Louisville, North Carolina and Duke during the regular season.
NC State Wolfpack NCAA Tournament Starting lineup
- G Trevor Lacey, 6-3, Jr., 15.8 ppg, 4.4 rpg
- G Ralston Turner, 6-5, Sr., 13.2 ppg, 3.3 rpg
- G Anthony Barber, 6-2, So., 12.1 ppg, 3.8 apg
- F Kyle Washington, 6-9, So., 6.7 ppg, 4.3 rpg
- F Lennard Freeman, 6-8, So., 3.4 ppg, 5.6 rpg
- Coach: Mark Gottfried (fourth season)
