March Madness 2nd Round Upset Picks
No. 5 Notre Dame (26-9) vs. No. 4 West Virginia (27-8)
When: Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 12:10 PM ET
Where: KeyBank Center, Buffalo, New York
Odds: West Virginia -3
Analysis: West Virginia has had an impressive season, but the higher-seeded and favored Mountaineers are going down against a Notre Dame ballclub that is far more battle tested and has beaten several of their nationally-ranked ACC rivals this season.
While the Fighting Irish struggled to get past Princeton 60-58 in their opener on Thursday, West Virginia didn’t look any better in their 86-80 win over Bucknell, also on Thursday.
61 percent of the betting public like the Fighting Irish to get the job done in this intriguing affair and so do I, seeing as how Notre Dame has gone 5-1 ATS in their last six games as an underdog and 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games following an SU win.
West Virginia may be the better statistical team at both ends of the floor, but the Mountaineers are just 1-6 ATS in their last seven games against a team with a winning SU record and 0-4 ATS in their last four games as a favorite.
More importantly, I don’t believe West Virginia’s pressing style of play will work against a Note Dame squad that just plays smart basketball far more often than not.
Not only will the Irish cover the spread in this contest, but they’ll do so by beating West Virginia outright.

No. 5 Iowa State (24-10) vs. No. 4 Purdue (26-7)
When: Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 9:40 PM ET
Where: BMO Harris Bradley Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Odds: Purdue -1
Analysis: Purdue may be the higher seed in this contest and they may be slight favorites, but I’m going to urge you to join the 58 percent of public bettors that like the Iowa State Cyclones to get the win and ATS cover.
The Boilermakers may have a Player of the Year candidate in power forward Caleb Swanigan, but for me, the far more explosive Iowa State Cyclones are peaking at the right time and simply have too much firepower for Purdue to keep pace with.
While Purdue was solid in their 80-70 win over Vermont in their opener, Iowa State exploded on dangerous Nevada to get the 84-73 win over the Wolf Pack by draining 8 of 15 three-pointers.
While Purdue has compiled an impressive 5-1 mark in six neutral site games this season, Iowa State has been even better in going 7-1 in their eight neutral site contests.
Purdue has been phenomenal in going 5-1 ATS in their last six neutral site games as a favorite while also going 21-8 ATS in their last 29 non-conference games.
Still, Iowa State is 4-0 ATS in their last four games, 7-1 ATS in their last eight games following an ATS win and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games against a team with a winning percentage above .600, making the Cyclones the pick for me in this matchup.
