March Madness First Four Betting Analysis

#16 Farleigh-Dickinson vs #16 Prairie View A&M
When: Tuesday, March 19 at 6:40 pm ET
Where: University of Dayton Arena, Dayton, OH
TV: TruTV
Odds: Farleigh-Dickinson -1.5

Betting Analysis: Prairie View A&M battles Farleigh-Dickinson on Tuesday, March 19 to kick off the 2019 NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament.
Farleigh-Dickinson offers -1.5 against the spread odds to beat tough Prairie View A&M, the Southwest Athletic Conference winners. Prairie View went a decent 18-14-1 ATS overall. They went a very good 10-10-1 ATS on the road.

It’s important to look at road against the spread records because no team technically plays at home in the NCAA Tournament. FDU’s road against the spread record is downright intimidating at 11-5. That makes Farleigh-Dickinson the team to back to cover.

Pick: Farleigh-Dickinson

#11 Belmont vs #11 Temple
When: Tuesday, March 19 at 9:10 pm ET
Where: University of Dayton Arena, Dayton, OH
TV: truTV
Odds: Belmont -3.5

Betting Analysis: Regular season Ohio Valley Champion Belmont might have lost their conference tournament to the Murray State Racers, but already college hoops handicappers are lining up behind the Bruins to beat and cover against AAC team Temple.

Belmont beat UCLA and lost by only 11 to Purdue this season. The loss to Purdue happened earlier in the season. The Bruins average 87.4 points per game, ranking second in the nation. They shoot 50% from the field and 37.4% from three. They also went 11-4 ATS on the road.

Temple won’t know what hit them.

Pick: Belmont

#16 North Carolina Central vs #16 North Dakota State
When: Wednesday, March 20 at 6:40 pm ET
Where: University of Dayton Arena, Dayton, OH
TV: truTV
Odds: North Dakota State -5

Betting Analysis: The North Carolina Central Eagles ended their season going 8-2 on the moneyline and 7-1-2 ATS. The Eagles are a defense first team that only averages 71.4 points per game off 45.6% shooting from the field and 31.5% shooting from three.

North Dakota State ended their regular season on a 4-game winning streak. The Bison have gone 7-3 ATS in their last 10. Although North Dakota State is favored, it makes sense to take NCC against the spread because the Bison are only 4-7-1 ATS in away games while North Carolina Central went 8-7-1 ATS in their away games.

Pick: North Carolina Central

#11 Arizona State vs #11 St. John’s
When: Wednesday, March 20 at 9:10 pm ET
Where: University of Dayton Arena, Dayton, OH
TV: truTV
Odds: ASU -1

Betting Analysis: Arizona State shows up favored by a single point to take down St. John’s on Wednesday and march on to the NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament Round of 64.

The Sun Devils had an excellent Pac 12 Tournament, beating UCLA before falling in overtime to eventual Pac 12 Tournament champion Oregon. ASU is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following an ATS loss and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up loss.

Although the Sun Devils look good on paper to cover, St. John’s will have the best player on the court in Shamorie Ponds. Ponds could carry the Red Storm to an upset victory because St. John’s is 8-3 ATS in their last 11 after an ATS loss.

Pick: St. John’s
