March Madness Free Picks – South Region R64

The 2016 March Madness South Region could very well have the has the top overall team in the nation, top-seeded Kansas, in it. You wouldn’t know that Kansas was the overall ranked number one by the quality of teams in the South Region. No. 9 Connecticut and No. 8 Colorado made my 2016 March Madness expert picks for the South Region in the round of 64. I also like the looks of No. 16 Austin Peay taking on No. 1 Kansas against the spread. Both of those games are on Thursday. On Friday, No. 10 Temple battles No. 7 Iowa in the South in one of the top matchups in the Round of 64.

A Closer Look At My March Madness Free Picks For The South Region R64

No. 9 Connecticut at No. 8 Colorado
When: Thursday, March 17 at 1:30 pm ET
TV: TNT
Betting Spread: Connecticut -4

Everybody is on Connecticut in this first round game. Why not? The Huskies finished the regular season winning 4 in a row both straight up and ATS. Unfortunately for Connecticut, it took 4 overtimes for the Dogs to beat Cincinnati 104 to 97 on March 11. Then, Connecticut had to take down Temple 77 to 62 on March 12 and Memphis 72 to 58 on March 13. The Huskies only get to rest for 4 days before taking on a tough, fast, Colorado team. The Buffaloes went 5 and 0 ATS in their final 5 games of the season. That includes losing by only 4 points to Arizona in a 78 to 82 game in Round 1 of the Pac 12 Tournament. I’m backing Colorado.

Pick: Colorado

No. 16 Austin Peay at No. 1 Kansas
When: Thursday, March 17 at 4:00 pm ET
TV: TNT
Betting Spread: Kansas -26

The Jayhawks should have no trouble covering a 26 point spread against Austin Peay, right?  Not so fast. The Governors play a small line-up that really gelled towards the end of the regular season. Austin Peay covered in its final 5 out of 6. They’ve won 6 in a row. 6’ 8” center Chris Horton averages 18.9 points per game. He shoots 60% from the field.  Horton averages 12 boards a game. Kansas is an excellent squad, but Horton might be one of those special players. The Jayhawks should have loads of trouble covering such a huge spread. I like Austin Peay.

Pick: Austin Peay

No. 10 Temple vs No. 7 Iowa
When: Friday, March 18 at 3:00 pm ET
TV: truTV
Betting Spread: Iowa -7

Temple versus Iowa is shaping up as one of the most competitive games of Round 1. Why Iowa is favored by 7 points in this battle is beyond me. The Hawkeyes lost 6 out of their last 8 games. They couldn’t beat such stalwarts as Penn State and freaking Illinois. With that being written, I do feel that Iowa could come out on top in this. I just don’t think that they’re good enough to beat Temple by more than 4 points. So, I’m backing the Owls who went 4 and 1 straight up in their last 5 and 3 and 1 ATS in their last 4 to end the season.

Pick: Temple
