Northeastern Will Cover the Spread If
The Huskies can keep up with Notre Dame’s offense.
Northeastern won the CAA Conference fair and square. They beat NC-Wilmington 78 to 71 and they beat William & Mary 72 to 61 to win the conference tournament. They deserve the bid to the NCAA Tournament.
But, did they have to face Notre Dame in the first round? The problem that Northeastern is going to have in the first round is that their defense just isn’t good enough to stop Notre Dame’s offense. The defense allows 65 points per game from 44.5% shooting. Northeastern allowed teams like NC-Wilmington, William & Mary, and James Madison to score close to 65 points and average close to 45% shooting per matchup against it. What will Notre Dame do? Northeastern’s best chance of covering the spread in this game is to force the pace and get easy baskets in transition. Notre Dame shoots to well to hope to stop the Irish from scoring.
Notre Dame Will Cover the Spread If
Notre Dame defends the three-point line as well as they did their last time out.
Notre Dame is hot. The Fighting Irish won 3 games in a row in the ACC Tournament to cut down the nets. They beat Miami, Duke and North Carolina.

In every single one of their ACC Tournament wins, Notre Dame dominated on defense. It was a different style for a team that beat their opponents by shooting lights out during the regular season. Notre Dame held Miami to 36.4% from the field and 25% from the three-point line. Duke looked stunned in their 64 to 74 loss to Notre Dame. Sure, the Irish allowed the Blue Devils to shoot 45% from the field, but they held Duke to 3 out of 17 from the arc. That’s 17.6%.
In the ACC Championship game, North Carolina shot 53% from the field but only 29.2% from the three-point line. Notre Dame shoots threes at 39.2%. If they’re shooting threes at close to 40% and their opponents are shooting threes at less than 30%, what’s going to happen?
