March Madness Sweet 16 Upset Picks

As if enough upsets haven’t happened already in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, the Sweet 16 could be nothing but upsets. The first game where it looks like an upset might take place is when Texas A&M battles Oklahoma on Thursday March 24. Also on Thursday, March 24, Oregon takes on Duke. My final upset pick is in the Notre Dame vs Wisconsin matchup. That game takes place on Friday, March 25.

Listen: Texas A&M vs Oklahoma

Texas A&M had one of the most amazing comebacks in NCAA Tournament history on Sunday. Down by 12 points with 44 seconds left, the Aggies managed to make up the difference and send their game versus Northern Iowa into overtime. Texas A&M won the game 92 to 88 in double-overtime. The grit that the Aggies displayed cannot be overlooked.

Oklahoma has been very good during the tournament. Buddy Hield has been, as usual, fantastic. Hield scored27 points versus Cal State Bakersfield. He scored 36 points in Oklahoma’s 85 to 81 win over VCU in the Round of 32. But the Sooners haven’t covered a spread in 7 straight games. Eventually, the non covers will lead to straight up losses.

In this case that should happen because Oklahoma plays a team with an incredible defense. The Aggies should upset the Sooners on Thursday.

Pick: Oklahoma

Listen: Duke vs Oregon

Oregon beat a tough St. Joseph’s squad 69 to 64 on Sunday. The Ducks played a team with a much slower style than theirs. They proved that they can play with slow down teams and win. But, what will happen when Oregon faces a team that enjoys running just as much as they do?  Usually, the Ducks would have no problem. In this case, the Ducks have a major problem because 2 of the best players in the tournament play for the Blue Devils.

Grayson Allen had 23 points, 10 boards and 5 assists versus UNC-Wilmington. Against Yale, Allen had 29 points, 2 boards and an assist. Brandon Ingram scored 20 points, grabbed 9 boards and dished 3 assists versus UNC-Wilmington. Against Yale, Ingram scored 25 points, grabbed 5 boards and dished 2 assists.

Oregon can run an opponent out of the building. That’s not likely to happen versus Duke because of Allen and Ingram. I like Duke to pull off the upset.

Pick: Duke

What: March Madness – East Region – Sweet Sixteen
Who: No. 7 Wisconsin Badgers (22-12) at No. 6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (23-11)
When: Friday, March 25, 2016

Listen: Wisconsin vs Notre Dame

You have to give Notre Dame props for beating Thomas Walkup and the S.F. Austin Lumberjacks 76 to 75 in the Round of 32. Notre Dame fought hard for the 1 point win. But the Irish face a team in Wisconsin that just refuses to lose.

Bronson Koenig hit a game winning shot to send Xavier packing in the Badgers’ 66 to 63 win on Sunday. The Badgers have that look of a team of destiny. They’ll beat Notre Dame as a slight dog on Friday.

Pick: Wisconsin
