March Madness West Round 1 PicksJosh Bailey
Arizona didn’t get the number 1-seed in the West Region. It went to Gonzaga. That makes sense since the Zags only lost a single game during the regular season. Gonzaga also beat Arizona this season. But, who has the better matchup in Round 1 in the West? Keep reading for my ATS picks for every game in the NCAA Tournament West Region Round 1!
March Madness West Round 1 ATS Picks
- Arizona -17 vs North Dakota
Arizona won the Pac 12 Tournament because they have the best defense in the conference. In Zona’s 86 to 75 win over UCLA in the Pac 12 Tourney, they held the Bruins to 40.7% from the field, and 16% from three. Arizona’s going to drub North Dakota in Round 1.
- Notre Dame -7 vs Princeton
Some love is going Princeton’s way to cover against the spread versus Notre Dame. Why not? The Tigers are the 12 and the Irish are the 5. But, in this 5 versus 12 match up, the 5 has a huge advantage. Notre Dame is as solid across the board as any team in the NCAA Tournament. I am betting the Irish punish Princeton.
- Gonzaga -22.5 vs South Dakota State
South Dakota State isn’t a bad team. Gonzaga is a great team. The Zags should have no trouble covering versus South Dakota State and march into Round 2. That doesn’t mean that Gonzaga makes it to the Final Four, it just means that the Zags beat the Jackrabbits by at least 23 points. Bet Gonzaga.
- Florida State -12 vs Florida Gulf Coast
Florida State, when they’re on, can be a scary team. The Seminoles are terrific in the open court. This is a crazy tough matchup for Florida State, though. Florida Gulf Coast is almost just as good in the open court as Florida State. There’s a chance that FGC upsets FSU in one of the most intriguing matchups in Round 1. To be safe, I’m taking the points and betting Florida Gulf Coast.
- West Virginia -13.5 vs Bucknell
Bucknell isn’t good enough to keep it close versus West Virginia. The Mountaineers started out great versus Iowa State in the Big 12 Tournament Championship before allowing the Cyclones to use their speed to get the best of them. I am betting on West Virginia to win by over 20.
- Maryland -2 vs Xavier
I think Maryland guard Melo Trimble is one of the best all-around players in college basketball. But, Maryland got a tough draw versus the suddenly surging Xavier Musketeers. The Musketeers played deep into the Big East Tournament. I see Xavier taking that momentum and dropping Maryland.
- Vanderbilt -1 vs Northwestern
Northwestern lost 48 to 76 to Wisconsin in the Big Ten Tournament. Vanderbilt upset Florida 72 to 62 in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament. I don’t need any more information to decide which team I’m backing. Bet Vandy.
- St. Mary’s -4.5 vs VCU
St. Mary’s lost to Gonzaga three times during the regular season. There’s no shame in losing to the Zags, who are the 1-seed in the West. There is shame in losing to Texas-Arlington. There’s so much shame in losing to Texas-Arlington that I like VCU in their match-up with the Gaels in Round 1. Bet VCU.
