Michigan State Will Cover 2-point the Spread If

Travis Trice takes over.

Michigan State versus Louisville might be the toughest game to call so far in the NCAA Tournament. Sure, making picks in the tournament is always difficult to do, but picking between two teams that are as alike as Michigan State and Louisville is almost impossible to do.

How alike are the two squads?  They are so alike that the winner against the spread comes down to which top player, Travis Trice being that player for the Spartans, that shows up on Sunday. Trice has been unreal so far in the Big Dance. He scored 23 of Michigan State’s 60 points in the Spartans’ 60 to 54 win over Virginia in the second round. He scored 24 of Michigan State’s 62 points in the Spartans’ 62 to 58 win over Oklahoma in the Sweet 16. Trice has to take over on Sunday versus Louisville if the Spartans hope to cover the spread.

Michigan State’s Elite Eight Projected Starting Line Up

  • G Travis Trice, 6-0, Sr., 14.8 ppg, 5.4 apg
  • G Tum Tum Nairn, 5-10, Fr., 2.2 ppg, 2.6 apg
  • F Denzel Valentine, 6-5, Jr., 14.5 ppg, 6.1 rpg
  • F Branden Dawson, 6-6, Sr., 11.6 ppg, 9.3 rpg
  • C Gavin Schilling, 6-9, So., 5.5 ppg, 4.2 rpg
  • Coach: Tom Izzo (20th season)

Louisville Will Cover the 2-point Spread If

Terry Rozier continues his tournament brilliance.

Trice has been the man for Michigan State during this tournament. For Louisville, it’s been Terry Rozier. Rozier carried the Cardinals to the Elite Eight in Louisville’s 75 to 65 win over North Carolina State in the Sweet 16 on Friday.

Rozier scored his usual 17 points. What made him special on Friday night is that he grabbed 14 rebounds. Rozier grabbed more boards than Montrezl Harrel and Mangok Mathiang combined. He was a man on a mission and it showed. Versus Northern Iowa, Rozier scored 25 points, dished 7 assists and grabbed 5 boards.

It’s obvious that Rozier’s excellent play is the reason that Louisville beat both Northern Iowa and North Carolina State. Since Travis Trice has been as good as Rozier in the tournament, the team that covers the spread in this game is going to be the one whose best player is able to out play the other. Rozier has a good shot against Trice because unlike Michigan State, Rozier can always lean on Harrell to help him if things get tough while Trice is required to be awesome for Michigan State to cover.
