Michigan State Will Cover the 2-point Spread If
Michigan State can force Oklahoma into a half-court game.
Michigan State did something to Virginia that very few basketball handicappers thought was possible. The Spartans beat Virginia on defense and in a half-court game. Michigan State scored 60 points versus the Cavaliers’ defense. They shot 42% from the field and a terrific 50% from the arc against Virginia. The Spartans held the Cavaliers to 54 points on 29.8% shooting from the field. Virginia shot less than 11.8% from behind the three-point line against Michigan State.
If the Spartans have any hopes of covering the spread versus Oklahoma on Friday night, they’re going to have to play in the half-court and force Oklahoma to take bad shots when they’re on defense. Michigan State’s point-guard Travis Trice has been great at controlling the pace of the game. If he can do it versus Oklahoma on Friday night, the Spartans will be playing in the Elite Eight on Sunday.

Oklahoma Will Cover the 2-point Spread If
The Sooner can get buckets in transition.
Oklahoma has shown tons of grit and determination in their first two NCAA Tournament wins. Versus Albany, Oklahoma had to fight for a 69 to 60 win as a -13 point favorite. Against Dayton in the second round, Oklahoma fought hard for a 72 to 66 victory as a -4 point favorite. Oklahoma has tons of heart, but it’s going to take more than determination to cover the spread versus Michigan State on Friday night.
What Oklahoma needs to do is find a way to get easy buckets in transition. Once Michigan State gets into their defense, it’s going to be very difficult for the Sooners to get good looks. Buddy Heild, the Sooners’ best scorer, hasn’t been effective so far during this tournament. Now, Heild faces a defense that has been other worldly during the tournament. For Oklahoma to get Heild on track and to cover the spread in this Sweet 16 matchup, they’re going to have to get buckets in transition.
