Michigan State Will Cover the 5-point Spread If
Michigan State’s defense is stout for two quarters.
After the first half in Michigan State’s first game of the 2015 NCAA Tournament, it looked like the Spartans were going to coast to an easy victory. Sparty was up by 13 at halftime versus Georgia, 35 to 22. Michigan State was firmly in control.
Georgia outscored Michigan State 41 to 35 in the second half. The Spartans won 70 to 63 but they failed in the second half on the defensive end and actually could have lost the game if the ball hadn’t bounced their way towards the end. Michigan State has to play two halves of excellent defense versus Virginia. The Cavaliers love to play defense, but they can turn it on offensively if need be. If MSU hopes to cover the spread, they had better be tough on the defensive end for the entire 40 minutes.

Virginia Will Cover the 5-point Spread If
The Cavaliers push the pace forcing the Spartans into bad plays.
Virginia garnered a 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament by being one of the stingiest defensive teams in all of college basketball. The Cavaliers allow only 51.2 points per game from their opponents. Teams shoot only 36.6% from the field on average versus Virginia’s excellent defense. On offense, Virginia was happy playing in the half-court. They’d beat teams by 20 after scoring only 60 a contest.
But the Cavaliers play a team in Michigan State on Sunday that doesn’t mind fighting in a half-court game. Virginia learned in their 79 to 67 win over Belmont in Round 1 on Friday that just because you can play excellent defense it doesn’t mean that you can get separation. Virginia pushed the pace offensively versus Belmont and they scored 79 points because of it. If Virginia forces Michigan State to play fast, they should cover the spread because Virginia is a better team on the offensive end.
