Butler Will Cover the 4.5-Point Spread If

They’re hitting their three point shots.

Butler beat Texas in a low-scoring game on Thursday, 56 to 48, through guts and determination. The Longhorns actually out-rebounded the Bulldogs 39 to 25. Texas had a chance to beat Butler late in the second half, but the Bulldogs just had a bit more grit than Texas had.

Butler shouldn’t let the victory get to their heads, though. If they give Notre Dame the same chances, the Irish is going to beat them silly on Saturday. What Butler needs to do is be much better from the field and tons better from the three-point line. Butler shot only 33.3%, 16 out of 48, from the field versus Texas. They shot only 30.8%, 4 out of 13 from behind the arc. The Bulldogs have to be better from behind the arc if they hope to cover the spread because Notre Dame is one of the best shooting teams in college basketball.

Notre Dame Will Cover the 4.5-Point Spread If

The Irish defense shows up.

Notre Dame beat Duke 74 to 64 in the ACC Tournament by holding the Blue Devils to 16.7% shooting from three. The Irish beat North Carolina 90 to 82 in the ACC Tournament by shooting 50% from three. When Notre Dame is hitting their three point shots or playing great defense, they can challenge any team in the nation.

Versus Northeastern in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Notre Dame did neither particularly well. They shot only 33.3% from the three-point line and they allowed Northeastern to shoot 49.1% from the field. Northeastern almost upset Notre Dame in a 69 to 65 Irish win. If Notre Dame’s defense doesn’t show up versus Butler, they won’t cover the spread. Kellen Dunham will drain threes from everywhere behind the arc and Butler’s inside game will dominate Notre Dame’s big men. The Irish defense has to play much better if they hope to cover the spread versus Butler.
