Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs Connecticut Huskies Odds & Final Score Prediction

For the second straight season, the UConn Huskies and Notre Dame Fighting Irish will play for the women’s National Championship. While for UConn it was business as usual as Geno Auriemma’s Huskies routed the Terps, 81-58, getting Notre Dame to the rematch set required some doing as the Fighting Irish needed a late put-back against the South Carolina Gamecocks to make the title game.

Notre Dame Will Cover the Spread If

Jewell Lloyd can take over like she did versus South Carolina.

This Notre Dame team has 3 new starters from last year’s championship runner-up squad that lost 58 to 76 to Connecticut in last year’s NCAAW Championship Game. One of the stars of Notre Dame’s squad is Jewell Lloyd.

Lloyd only hit 9 out of 24 shots versus the Gamecocks in Notre Dame’s 66 to 65 semi-final win. The percentage isn’t very good, but it shows that Lloyd isn’t afraid to shoot even though she’s had a difficult tournament. That’s what star players do. More importantly, Lloyd’s shooting set up forwards Taya Reimer and Brianna Turner. Reimer scored 16 and Turner scored 17. If Notre Dame has any shot of covering the spread versus Connecticut, Lloyd is going to have to find some way to bring the defense out a bit. That means that she’ll have to continue to shoot, even if they aren’t falling, so that she can set up Reimer and Turner in the paint.

Connecticut Will Cover the Spread If

Connecticut continues to share the ball.

Connecticut is on the verge of a third straight National Championship because it is the most complete team in all of college hoops. It doesn’t matter whether it is men’s or women’s college basketball. Nobody shares the ball better than Connecticut.

By share, it doesn’t mean that the Huskies require balanced scoring. It means that Connecticut’s only goal is to exploit their opponent’s weakness. Maryland went into their semi-final matchup with Connecticut sporting terrific guards. What did the Huskies do?  They dumped the ball into forward Morgan Tuck, who scored 24 points, and forward Breanna Stewart who scored 25. Guard Moriah Jefferson shot 5 out of 8 from the field and scored 14 points. Guard Kia Nurse scored only 5 points, but she took only 5 shots. The end result was an 81 to 58 victory over the Terps. If Connecticut is unselfish again on Tuesday night, if they find the best way to beat Notre Dame and exploit it, they’ll blow out the Irish, and they should cover the spread.
