Purdue Will Cover the Spread If
Purdue doesn’t forget that they’re in a basketball game.
Okay, that’s not exactly the reason, but it’s startling how badly Purdue played in the second half of their Big Ten tourney semifinal game versus Wisconsin. Purdue held a 5 point lead, 35 to 30, in their game versus the Badgers. They got outscored 41 to 16 in the second half and ended up losing 71 to 51. It was a terrible loss.
The first question is if Purdue has the mentality to get over such a loss. If Purdue does, they’ll need to remember, after getting a lead over Cincinnati, that they are in a basketball game. The Boilermakers have a huge edge inside with 7’0” A.J. Hammons. Hammons could dominate but he often times doesn’t because his head isn’t always in the game. Purdue needs to keep Hammons focused in order to cover the spread versus Cincinnati.

Cincinnati Will Cover the Spread If
The Bearcats’ guards can counter Purdue’s inside game.
Cincinnati has a very good front line. Octavius Ellis averages 10 points and 7 boards per game. Shaquille Thomas averages 6 points and close to 3 boards per game and Gary Clark averages 8 points and 7 boards per game. All three guys are going to have their hands full with Purdue’s front line, though, meaning that in order for Cincinnati to have success in this matchup they will need their guards to play well.
Guard Troy Caupin leads the team in assists per game at 3.5. He’s going to have to look for his shot more in this matchup if the Bearcats have any hopes of covering the spread. Caupin will definitely have to score in double-figures if not score close to 20 points in order for the Bearcats to have any shot. Purdue’s inside presence, because of Hammons, is just better than Cincinnati’s. They’ll need Caupin and the other starting guard, Farad Cobb, to carry the day for them. If Cincinnait doesn’t, they won’t cover the spread. In fact, they might get blown out in this matchup.
Cincinnati Bearcats March Madness Starting Lineup
- G Farad Cobb, 6-0, Jr., 8.6 ppg, 2.4 rpg
- G Troy Caupain, 6-3, So., 9.4 ppg, 3.6 rpg
- F Gary Clark, 6-7, Fr., 7.9 ppg, 6.9 apg
- F Shaquille Thomas, 6-7, Jr., 6.3 ppg, 2.8 rpg
- F Octavius Ellis, 6-10, Jr., 10.0 ppg, 7.3 rpg
- Coach: Mick Cronin (ninth season)
