Why Bet On The No. 10 Seeded Syracuse Orange

No opponent seems capable of solving Syracuse’s 2-3 zone defense. Gonzaga ran out to an 11 point lead before the Orange settled down defensively on Friday night. If Gonzaga couldn’t keep it going against the zone, why should Virginia be able to?  The Bulldogs ended up shooting 43.6% from the field and 38% from three. They still lost. Syracuse held Middle Tennessee State to 29.7% shooting from the field and 33.3% shooting from three in the Orange’s Round 2 win. Virginia could have trouble versus the 2-3 zone defense.

Why Bet On The No. 1 Seeded Virginia Cavaliers

Virginia has a solid inside and outside game. The best way to beat the zone is to dump the ball inside and, if the zone collapses, kick it out for three-point shots. Virginia averages 40% from three. They have 2 excellent inside players in Anthony Gill and Mike Tobey. Both Gill and Tobey are capable of getting the ball to the top three-point shooter in the ACC this season, London Perrantes. Virginia’s Malcolm Brogdon can also light up from behind the arc. If Syracuse decides to guard Perrantes and Brogdon, Virginia will dump the ball into Gill and Tobey.

Expert Pick & Final Score Prediction

The last time that these 2 teams played Virginia won 73 to 65. That game was way back on January 24. Sunday’s game could be very similar.

There should be no expectations that Virginia will blow out Syracuse on Sunday. Syracuse doesn’t mind playing a slowdown game like Virginia. The Orange is going to hold the basketball and look for the best possible shot just like Virginia is going to do. Virginia should end up winning the game outright because the Cavaliers have better players.

But it won’t be easy. Syracuse should make this close until around the 3 to 4 minute mark. At that point, Virginia will put the kibosh on any Syracuse comeback. I think Virginia takes it by close to 10 points.

My final score prediction is Virginia 74, Syracuse 65.
