Top 6 Must Bet March Madness Cinderella TeamsJosh Bailey
It’s Super Bowl Sunday which signals the official unofficial beginning of college hoops March madness. While everyone is looking at Kentucky, Duke & Virginia as the must bet college hoops teams in 2015, don’t over look the following Cinderella March Madness teams.
Top 6 Must Bet March Madness Cinderella Teams
- Southern Methodist Mustangs
Larry Brown’s team only has 4 losses on the season. It’s going to be very difficult to keep the Mustangs out of the NCAA Tournament in 2015 and let’s not forget that Brown coached Danny and the Miracles, that’s Danny Manning, to a championship in 1988. SMU was shut out of the NCAA Tournament last season. With Brown’s penchant for getting his teams to play way above their level during March Madness, it’s doubtful they’ll shut out the Mustangs again.
- Davidson Wildcats
If they hadn’t lost 70 to 75 to St. Joe’s on Jan. 31, they’d be number one on this list. Davidson is a remarkable 13 and 3 against the spread, which makes them the darling of sports bettors. But, they also score 80 points a game and shoot 47% from the field. And, let’s not forget that Cinderella history is on this team’s side. Remember when Seth Curry took them to the Elite Eight?
- Louisiana State Tigers
Sure, they play in a power conference with Kentucky and there is a chance that if LSU falls apart they might not even make the NCAA Tournament, but if they do, opponents had better watch out. Third year coach Johnny Jones has recruited some seriously talented players including likely SEC Player of the Year Jordan Mickey who is averaging 16.4 points and 10.9 boards per game while shooting 52% from the floor.
- Valparaiso Crusaders
Once again Valparaiso is running away with the Horizon Conference. They’re already at 20 and 4 and 6 games ahead in the conference. They lost to Michigan State 54 to 65 in Round 1 as a fourteenth seed in 2013. They’ll probably be a fourteenth seed, or thereabouts, this season. The Crusaders have a 6’ 8”, 180 lb guard named E. Victor Nickerson who often likes to dump the ball into 6’ 9” forward Alec Peters who is averaging close to 18 points and 7 boards a game. This Valparaiso team is no joke.
- Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks
The Lumberjacks are 17 and 3 straight up and in control of the Southland Conference. They’ve got a legit “take-charge” forward in Jacob Parker and a true point-guard in Trey Pinkney. Plus, the team plays with no fear. The team that draws Stephen F. Austin in the first round had better watch out.
- Dayton Flyers
Also with only 4 losses, the Dayton Flyers beat Richmond, a team that thumped ranked VCU 64 to 55 on the road this past Saturday, 63 to 60 on January 24. Dayton has a great inside/outside game with forward Kendall Pollard and guard Jordan Sibert. Dayton will have to continue to play well and win games in order to get a bid, but if they do, they could do some serious damage.
