The East’s top-seeded Villanova Wildcats have won 15 straight games heading into the men’s basketball NCAA tournament and will face the 16th-seeded Lafayette Leopards.
Villanova rolled through all but two opponents during the regular season, posting a 32-2 record on their way to winning the Big East title and a top seed.
Lafayette finished fourth in the relatively unknown Patriot League this season, but won three straight in the conference tournament, including a semifinal upset of regular season champion Bucknell to earn an invite to the 2015 NCAA Tournament.

The Leopards hire Tonya Harding.
Patriot League champion Lafayette gets the pleasure of taking on 2 overall seed Villanova, the number one seed in the East Region, on Thursday. Lafayette has won 6 out of their last 7 games. They’ve been on fire from both the field and from behind the arc. The Leopards are shooting 48% from the field and 41.3% from behind the arc.
But shooting that well and outscoring teams like Bucknell, Army, Boston and Colgate is different than trying to outscore a team like Villanova. Lafayette has no chance of covering the spread in this matchup if they decide to run and gun with the Villanova Wildcats. Jay Wright’s team has too many scorers. The Leopards won’t be able to keep up. Lafayette’s best shot at keeping this close and covering the spread is to significantly improve upon their 45.6% from the field and 37.7% from three allowed per game percentages. They have to hold Villanova to less than 40% from the field if they hope to cover the spread.

Villanova Will Cover the Collosal 22.5-point Spread If
Villanova does their Villanova thing.
It sounds like a cop out to say that a team will cover the spread if it plays up to its potential, but that’s because some basketball handicappers may not know how good Villanova has been all year at covering spreads. The Wildcats are 24 and 9 against the spread this season. They haven’t lost a game straight up since January 19.
For the Wildcats to cover the spread against Lafayette, they just need to play to their potential. The team almost always covers the spread as it is. Villanova is 13 and 2 ATS in their last 15 games. They won’t need to do much in order to cover versus a team like the Leopards. All they will need to do is continue to play their brand of lock down defense and opportunistic offense. If the Wildcats do that, they should beat Lafayette by close to 30 points.
