UCLA Will Cover the 3.5-point Spread If
The Bruins can translae individual talent into team play.
UCLA might be peaking at the right time. The Bruins have covered the spread in 2 straight games. They beat USC by 26 points, 96 to 70, on March 12. In one of the Pac-12 Semifinals, they lost by only 6 points as a +11 point dog versus Arizona, one of the best teams in college basketball, 64 to 70.
UCLA’s offense shot 43.4% from the field and 40% from behind the three-point line. What’s more impressive than those percentages against Arizona’s lock down defense is that the Bruins took only 10 three-point shots and 53 shots from the field. It shows patience. UCLA faces a defense that is as lock down as Arizona’s on Thursday in SMU. If UCLA hopes to cover the spread against the very tough Mustangs, they’re going to have to show the same type of patience that they showed against Arizona in the Pac-12 Conference Tournament.

SMU Will Cover the 3.5-point Spread If
The Mustangs carry the chip of being denied a March Madness invite last year into this season.
Southern Methodist had no trouble punishing Temple and Connecticut in the AAC Tournament in order to win the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Mustangs were probably going to garner a bid anyhow, but just in case the Selection Committee decided to keep them out of the tourney, which is what happened in 2014, they decided to get the automatic bid.
They did it by being efficient on offense. Basketball handicappers should already know that Larry Brown’s team has one of the top defenses in college hoops. The key to success is how efficient the Mustangs play on offense. Versus Temple, they 47.2% from the field and 50% from the three-point line. Against Connecticut, the Mustangs shot only 35.3% from the field and 11.1% from behind the arc.

SMU beat Temple 69 to 56 as a 4 point favorite. They beat Connecticut 62 to 54 as a -3.5 point favorite. If the SMU that played Connecticut shows up against UCLA, the Mustangs will lose the game straight up, much less cover the spread.
