Michigan State Vs Virginia March Madness Odds & Final Score Prediction

The second-ranked Virginia Cavaliers may have a two-game buffer in the loss column in the battle for the ACC title, but will be without junior guard and second leading scorer (13.4 PPG) Justin Anderson.

Anderson, who is first in the ACC from 3-point range at blistering 48.4%, fractured a finger on his left hand in Saturday’s 52-47 victory over No. 9 Louisville and will miss four to six weeks leaving little room for the Cavaliers to falter in his absence.

Their first short-handed test will be the NC State Wolfpack who seem to be well on their way to NCAA tournament bubble status, but another win over a top-10 team would go a long way to lock in their March Madness tickets.

Virginia Will Cover the Spread If

The Cavaliers can get past the loss of Justin Anderson.

6’ 6”, 227lbs star Justin Anderson has a fractured finger that’s going to keep him off the court until sometime in March. That’s not a good thing for the Cavaliers. He’s actually a big bodied guard that plays ferocious defense and poses serious matchup problems for Virginia’s opponents.

Someone is going to have to step up for Virginia and replace Anderson’s 13.4 points per game. But that’s not the biggest issue for the Cavaliers. Virginia’s incredible defense, the best in the nation by many accounts, relies on Anderson to both double-team big men on the blocks and guard three-point shooters. Someone is going to have to step it up big time on the defensive end if Virginia wishes to be as spectacular at holding teams to 35.7% from the field and 50.7 points per game like they have been.

NC State Will Cover the Spread If

NC State’s guards can break down the Virginia defense.

NC State has two excellent guards in Trevor Lacey and Anthony Barber. Lacey is averaging 16.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. Barber averages 3.7 assists, 11.4 points, and 3.3 boards per game. Barber has scored 23 and 28 in the Wolfpack’s last 2 contests.

Even though both guards can light it up, that strategy may not be the one that will help NC State in this game. Virginia’s perimeter defense, even without Anderson, might be too good for Lacey and Barber to shoot lights out against it, which means that Lacey and Barber, if the Wolfpack is to put up points in this matchup, will have to break down the Virginia defense and get higher percentage shots. That’s a much easier thing to say than to get done since Virginia’s entire defense revolves around forcing opponents to take low percentage shots.

If the Wolfpack tries to run and gun against Virginia, like they did versus Wake Forest and like they did versus Georgia Tech, they’ll lose by 20 in this game.
