Wake Forest Will Cover the Spread If
Wake Forest can shoot as well in this game as they did the last time that they faced the Irish.
Wake Forest pummeled Notre Dame 81 to 69 the last time that these two teams met in March of 2014. Granted, Jerian Grant didn’t play in that matchup, but Grant alone shouldn’t have been able to stop the Deamon Decons from shooting so well.
Wake Forest shot 61% from the field when hitting 25 out of 41 shots. From three-point land, the Demon Deacons were flat out awesome when hitting 7 out of 10 for 70%. The low number of three-point shots tells us that Wake Forest was patient when taking the trey. They won’t need to be as that awesome to cover the spread this season against Notre Dame. Shooting close to 50% from the field should do the trick.
Notre Dame Will Cover the Spread If
The Irish can get out in transition and get open looks.
In particular, Notre Dame wants to get open looks from behind the three-point line. Notre Dame shoots 40% from behind the three-point line as a team. Pat Connaughton, who leads the team in rebounds per game at 8, shoots a fantastic 45.2% from behind the arc.
Even though coaches frown on teams taking open three-point shots in transition, how can anybody possibly expect a guy like Connaughton to pass up an open three when he’s so good at draining them? Notre Dame needs to get the transition game going. Grant should try and find Connaughton on the wing for an open three-point shot each and every time down the court. Connaughton hits at such a high percentage that a few misses won’t hurt the Irish in the least.
If Grant and Connaughton are working a two-man game from the behind the arc, Notre Dame should easily cover the spread. In fact, they should blow out Wake Forest in this matchup.
