Wichita State Will Cover the 1-point Spread If
All five starters can get involved on the offensive end.
Wichita State has been anything but a laughingstock during the NCAA Tournament. While Missouri Valley rival Northern Iowa failed miserably in their second round game versus Louisville, Wichita State excelled versus inter-state rival Kansas.
The Shockers handed Kansas a second round loss, 78 to 65. It was an impressive beat down. Wichita State shot 49% from the field when hitting 25 out of 51 shots. They made 10 out of 20 three-point shots for 50% from behind the arc. The most impressive stat from the Shockers in the game is that all five of their starters scored in double-figures. Darius Carter scored 10, Tekele Cotton added 19, Evan Wessel dropped 12, Ron Baker added 12, and Fred VanVleet, one of the best point-guards in this tournament, scored 17. If Wichita State can get balanced offensive production from their starting five versus Notre Dame, they should easily cover the spread in this Sweet 16 matchup.
Wichita State’s Sweet 16 Projected Starting Lineup:
- G Ron Baker, 6-3, Jr., 15 ppg, 4.5 rpg
- G Fred VanVleet, 6-0, Jr., 12.7 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 5.3 apg
- G Takele Cotton, 6-3, Sr., 9.6 ppg, 4 rpg
- G Evan Wessel, 6-4, Jr., 4.2 ppg, 3.4 rpg
- F Darius Carter, 6-7, Sr., 11.2 ppg, 5.3 rpg
- Coach: Gregg Marshall (eighth season)
Notre Dame Will Cover the 1-point Spread If
The Irish can continue to excel in the half court.
Although Notre Dame’s two victories in the NCAA Tournament haven’t been pretty, they’ve been very effective. The Irish allowed Northeastern to hit 27 out of 55 from the field for 49.1%, but Notre Dame won the game 69 to 65 because they played well in the half court. Notre Dame shot 57% in that first round matchup.
In the second round, the Irish beat Butler, an excellent half court team, 67 to 64 in overtime. Notre Dame held Butler to 33.3% shooting from the field and 30% shooting from the three-point line. Although the Irish can push the pace, playing in the half court has suited them well during this tournament. They need to continue to play well in the half court. Wichita State, with VanVleet leading the charge, is excellent in transition. Notre Dame is going to need to hold down Wichita State’s possessions in this matchup if they hope to cover the spread.
Notre Dame’s Sweet 16 Projected Starting Lineup:
- F Zach Auguste, 6-10, Jr, 12.6 ppg, 6.4 rpg
- G Demetrius Jackson, 6-1, So, 12.4 ppg, 3.6 rpg
- G Steve Vasturia, 6-5, So, 9.8 ppg, 3.0 rpg
- G Jerian Grant, 6-5, Sr, 16.8 ppg, 3.1 rpg
- G Pat Connaughton, 6-5, Sr, 12.5 ppg, 7.3 rpg
- Coach: Mike Brey (15th season)
