2014 Alabama Crimson Tide Season Betting Preview

As long as the Alabama Crimson Tide has coach Nick Saban running the show they will have a shot at the College Football Championship trophy, even if the league is making a change to the playoffs in this 2014 season. Click here for more College Football week 1 odds and picks.

Saban saw an opportunity to leave Tuscaloosa subsequently after he couldn’t make the BCS Championship game for the third year in a row; an improbable loss to Auburn took away the possibility, but despite the huge offer made by the Texans Longhorns to join and lead the program, he maintained his word and stayed with Alabama.

Years ahead of most of the programs, Saban’s recruiting prowess gives Alabama another shot at championship. The Crimson Tide are listed at +600 to win the title on the Sportbet.com’s College Football Future Betting Odds board, only behind current champion: Florida State.

How Will Alabama’s Offense Look in 2014?

Longtime quarterback AJ McCarron is now in the NFL, sad for those of us who won’t get to see the new Mrs McCarron as much as we like. His departure leaves a hole behind center and head coach Saban has yet to name a starter.

Saban’s two options at quarterback are senior Blake Sims, who has been McCarron backup since 2011, and Jacob Coker, who arrived transferred from Florida State.

"Blake Sims has been competing for the position. He really did a pretty good job in the spring. He didn’t play great in the spring game, but we really didn’t do the things that he’s capable of doing", Saban said to ESPN in a recent interview.

"There’s going to be a competition there, as well as some of the younger players will be involved in that competition," he added. "We really can’t make that decision or prediction as to what’s going to happen at that position, but the development of that position, regardless of who the player is, is going to be critical to the success of our team."

Whoever is quarterback this season can be sure will have the help of stud running back T.J. Yeldon, who’s expected to have a big season from the backfield, and rated +1400 to win the Heisman Trophy. Yeldon had 190 carries in 2013, 1163 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns; he’ll be helped by Kenyan Drake, who is use by red zone situations, recording nine touchdowns last season.

In the WR department junior wide receiver Amari Cooper will have a big year as he lead the team with 615 yards; however, he needs to pick up his scoring numbers as he only found the end zone four times last season. At Coopers’s side will be WR DeAndrew White, who decided to stay one more season and avoid the NFL draft.

Alabama will be the same horse we know; they will get things done in the ground and take advantage of the good positioning their defense gives them.

How Will Alabama’s Defense Look in 2014?

Year after year head coach Nick Saban loses a key member of his defensive unit, but the art of it is replacing them with young blood filled with hunger. Saban managed to get defensive linemen Jarran Reed and D.J. Pettway from college transfers, and they will join sophomore end A’Shawn Robinson, who led the team with 5.5 sacks last season.

The middle of the defense lost linebacker C.J. Mosley – Butkus Award winner- and senior Trey DePriest is next in line to fill the spot with leadership. Junior Reggie Ragland and talented sophomore Reuben Foster closes a three linebackers set in a 4-3 formation.

Bama’s biggest concern should be their secondary as junior safety Landon Collins present itself as the only true pass defender in the unit.

Alabama Crimson Tide Betting Analysis

Alabama didn’t like being cut out of the BCS Championship game last season, especially considering how it went down, leaving a chip on their sholder. Be warned this team will want to make an impact early after the loss of McCarron.
