2016 College Football Heisman Trophy PicksNoah Williams
The best players in the nation once again will be in a tight battle for the Heisman Trophy. Last year, Derrick Henry ended up taking home the hardware. But before Henry got the buzz, RB Leonard Fournette at LSU was a shoo-in for the award. Fournette isn’t a shoo-in this season. The odds-on favorite to win the Heisman this season is Clemson QB Deshaun Watson.
A Closer Look At My 2016 College Football Heisman Trophy Picks
Who is the best bet to win the 2016 Heisman?
Largely based on a strong performance in the national championship game, Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson jumped from +800 to +450 and is now the undisputed front-runner. Several months later, Watson’s odds improved to a high of +350.
Is Watson a good pick at chalky odds? Are there any other players that Heisman bettors need to take a look at?
The Odds-On Favorite Pick To Win The Heisman Trophy: Deshaun Watson +600
Watson probably should have won the Heisman Trophy last season. It made sense that they chose Derrick Henry, but, truly, Watson was the best player in college football. Alabama was a complete team. With or without Henry it would have been difficult to beat the Crimson Tide after their fourth game.
But Watson carried the Clemson Tigers to the 4-Team Playoff and to the Championship Game against Alabama. Watson can win a game with his legs or his arm. He’s a true dual-threat QB. I think that Deshaun has a great season.
The Smart Pick To Win The Heisman Trophy: Christian McCaffrey +700
To me, this is the player that Heisman Trophy bettors should jump all over. Christian McCaffrey is easily one of the most explosive, important, players in college football. The Stanford Cardinal lost their starting QB from last season, Kevin Hogan, meaning that they’ll need to lean on McCaffrey even more in 2016. Last season, McCaffrey rushed for 2,019 yards. He averaged 6 yards a carry. He also caught 45 passes for 645 yards. He scored 13 total touchdowns. This dude is a football player.
The Longshot Pick To Win The Heisman Trophy: J.T. Barrett +1500
J.T. Barrrett decided to stick with Coach Urban Meyer. Why not? His competition at QB has moved on to the NFL. Barrett knows that he’s going to be the key piece in Meyer’s quest for a second National Championship in the last 3 years. There’s no doubt that Ohio State lost a lot on offense. Both WR Michael Thomas and RB Ezekiel Elliott left for the NFL. Not only that, but offensive lineman Taylor Decker departed as well. No problem. With Barrett under center, it’s going to be hard for any team to keep the Buckeyes from scoring a lot of points. Barrett is this year’s Heisman Trophy dark horse candidate.
