With the start of the 2017 NCAA college football season getting closer by the day, collegiate gridiron betting enthusiasts everywhere need to know which handful of teams look like they’ll have the best chances of cashing in on their season-long odds to win the 2018 national championship.

While Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide are once again, the prohibitive favorite to win the 2018 national championship, the Clemson Tigers just proved that, as perennially powerful as the Tide are, they are not ‘locks’ to win the national championship each and every year.

With that said, this take a look at a few other betting picks who could upset Bama to win the 2017-18 College Football National Championship.

The Las Vegas Oddsmakers Favorite Pick To Win: Alabama +310

The Crimson Tide lost a bunch of players to the NFL Draft (what else is new?) but they’re once again the prohibitive favorites and for good reason. Not only will polarizing head coach Nick Saban almost assuredly produce another fantastic defense in 2017, but more importantly, he has a dual-threat, Heisman Trophy-contending quarterback in Jalen Hurts (2,780 passing yds, 954 rushing yds, 23 passing TDs, 13 rushing Tds) and likely another in supremely gifted, but oft-injured running back Bo Scarborough (812 yds, 11 TDs). You might not like them very much if you live outside the state of Alabama, but there’s a reason why the Tide are favored!

The Smart Pick To Win The 2017 NCAA Football Title: Penn State +2000

With the sixth-best odds to win the 2018 national championship, clearly oddsmakers were impressed with Penn State’s stellar 11-3 campaign a year ago, despite the fact that it ended with a heartbreaking 52-49 loss to USC in the Rose Bowl. Heading into the new season, Penn State features a pair of legitimate Heisman Trophy contenders in gifted running back Saquon Barkley (1,496 yds, 22 Tds) and unflappable quarterback Trace McSorley (3,614 yds, 29 Tds) and that alone makes them worthy of their odds in my estimation. If the Nittany Lions play defense like they did in finishing 37th overall nationally, I believe James Franklin’s squad could end up in the four-team playoff after getting robbed this past season.

The Value Pick To Win The 2017 College Football Championship: Washington Huskies +2800

The Washington Huskies had a fine season in 2016 under widely-respected head coach Chris Petersen by going 12-2 and winning the PAC-12 title while reaching the four-team playoff. Still, after falling to Alabama 24-7 in the national semifinals, oddsmakers clearly aren’t showing the Huskies a lot of love as they own the ninth-best odds to win the 2018 national championship.

No matter, I believe Washington is offering great value as a +2800 pick, seeing as how the Huskies have their own pair of Heisman contenders in underrated quarterback Jake Browning (3,430 yds, 43 TDs) and equally underrated running back Myles Gaskin (1,373 yds, 10 Tds). While the Cougars will miss speedy wide receiver John Ross, I’m thinking everyone needs to remember that Washington ranked a stellar eighth in scoring (41.8 ppg) and equally impressive eighth in points allowed (17.7 ppg) and that Petersen is as good a coach as there is in the country, including Nick Saban.

The Longshot Pick To Win: Texas A&M +20000

So what the Aggies went a modest 8-5 a year ago and lost the top pick in the NFL draft in defensive end Myles Garrett. Kevin Sumlin is one of the best offensive minds in all of college football and the Aggies have a pair of legitimate playmakers in junior wide receiver Christian Kirk and sophomore running back Trayveon Williams. Kirk has accumulated nearly 2,000 receiving yards in two seasons, while Williams rushed for 1,057 yards as a freshman. While Sumlin has to figure out who his starting quarterback will be in 2017, the Aggies ranked an impressive 34th in scoring nationally 934.8 ppg) and equally solid 40th in points allowed (24.5 ppg). Sure, the Aggies have all kinds of obstacles to overcome heading into 2017, but that’s why they’re a +20000 longshot.
