Why Bet the Appalachian State Mountaineers Spread at +14.5

The Appalachian State Mountaineers are a good bet simply because they’re a really good program and are getting two touchdowns against a Georgia team it looks like they can play with.

The Mountaineers went 10-3 last season tare earned a co-Sun Belt conference championship while capping off their season with a 31-28 win over Toledo in the Camellia Bowl. More importantly, starting quarterback Taylor Lamb is back and looking to improve on his 27 career victories, including 21 over the last two seasons. Sun b=Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Year, running back Jalin Moore is also back after rushing for 1,402 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2016. The Offensive line is experienced with two senior starters and Lamb has a good No. 1 target in wide receiver Shaedon Meadors.

Defensively, the line is set with all three starters returning, including ends, Tee Sims and Caleb Fuller who combined for 10 sacks last season. Senior linebacker Eric Boggs is back after leading the Mountaineers in tackles last season and the secondary has three of its four starters returning including cornerbacks Clifton Duck and A.J. Howard who combined for eight interceptions a year ago.

Why Bet the Georgia Bulldogs Spread at -14.5

The Bulldogs are a good bet simply because they get more elite high school talent and are playing at home.

Georgia went 8-5 last season to record their lowest win total since 2013, although they closed out their 2016 campaign with a nice 31-23 win over TCU in the Liberty Bowl. Sophomore quarterback Jacob Eason is back under center and should be better because of experience if nothing else after completing a modest 55.1 percent of his passes as a freshman a year ago. Eason will hand off early and often to running backs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel, but the Bulldogs have question marks at wide receiver and on the offensive line where they’ll have three new starters.

Defensively, the Bulldogs are in great shape as they return a whopping 10 starters after finishing inside the top 20 against both, the pass and run a year ago. Georgia’s front seven could be downright dominant, with a bunch of players that look like likely NFL performers in defensive linemen Lorenzo Carter and Davin Bellamy and linebackers Roquan Smith and Natrez Patrick. The secondary features three senior starters so there’s a wealth of experience.

Appalachian State Mountaineers Vs Georgia Bulldogs Expert Analysis and Pick

I’m going to get right to the point by saying that I like Appalachian State to cover the spread seeing as how the Mountaineers are a robust 13-3 ATS in their last 16 road games and 4-1 ATS in their last five non-conference games

Conversely, Georgia is just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games and an identical 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games in the month of September. The Mountaineers are dangerous and I believe they’ll show that in this Week 1 opener, by keeping the final score much closer than the two-touchdown spread.
