Analyzing The Arizona Vs Utah Spread Betting Line

The 8 and 2 Arizona Wildcats are one of the worst against the spread betting teams in all of college football. The Wildcats have a great straight up record, but against the spread they’re an absolute horror show at 3 and 7. It isn’t often that a team goes 8 and 2 straight up and 3 and 7 against the spread.

But that’s Arizona. The Wildcats are 1 and 4 against the spread in their last 5 games. They lost straight up to USC 26 to 28 as a 1 point favorite, straight up to UCLA 7 to 17 as a +6.5 point dog, Arizona could only beat Colorado 38 to 20 as a -18.5 point home favorite and the team could only beat Washington 27 to 26 as a -7.5 point home favorite. The lone victory against the spread was a 59 to 37 win over Washington State on the rod.

Arizona’s offense hasn’t been nearly as explosive lately as it was earlier in the season. It could only score 7 against UCLA and 27 against Washington. The ‘Cats are still averaging 492 yards per game and 35.6 points per matchup. Defensively, Arizona is sort of a mess. The Wildcats are giving up 445.2 yards including 286.4 passing yards and 158.8 rushing yards. Teams score 26 points per game against Arizona’s defense.

The Utes’ defense is in stark contrast to Arizona’s. Utah allows only 388.5 yards per game and about 23.8 points. Utah has held USC to 24 points, ASU to 19 and Stanford to 17 points this season. On offense Utah has been very good in 2014. The Utes are averaging at total of 367.4 yards, which includes 177.5 yards on the ground, and 31.4 points per game.

Based on the trends, Utah should easily cover the spread in this matchup. The Utes are 8 and 1 against the spread versus a team with a winning record, 5 and 1 against the spread in their last 6 conference games and 7 and 3 ATS in their last 10 games after accumulating less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game. Arizona is 1 and 4 against the spread in their last 5 conference games, 1 and 9 ATS in their last 10 games following a straight up win and 1 and 6 ATS versus a team with a winning record.

Based on their record ATS, Arizona has been living on the edge for a while. Utah isn’t that much better than Arizona, but the Wildcats’ offense hasn’t been nearly as sharp as it was earlier in the season and Utah has a better defense than what Arizona has.

The Utes should win this game easily against an overmatched Arizona squad.

Pick: Utah -4
