Can Toledo Cover Big Spread Vs Akron in MAC Title Clash?Josh Bailey
The Toledo Rockets have had a fantastic, double-digit winning campaign and are pretty much better than the Akron Zips on both sides of the ball as the two teams get set for their 2017 MAC championship clash this coming Saturday. While both of these teams are riding identical two-game winning streaks into their conference championship, Toledo is basically far more explosive than Akron offensively, hence the fact that they’re nearly three-touchdown favorites to beat their conference rivals.
However, if you want to know which team is offering the best value against their MAC Championship odds when they square off at Ford Field on Saturday then let’s find out right now.
Can Toledo Cover the 21.5-Point Spread Against Akron in MAC Championship Clash?
Akron Zips (7-5) at Toledo Rockets (10-2)

Spread: Toledo -21.5
Akron has won two straight and three of their last four and come into their title tilt matchup off a solid 24-14 home win over Kent State this past weekend. The Zips led 24-7 at the half and pretty much just held on for the win in the second half by limiting the Golden Flashes to just one second-half score. However, Akron is also just 3-2 over their last five games and have been held to 24 points or less in four of those contests and 21 points or less three times over the span.
Akron has been without starting quarterback Thomas Woodson for the past two games for violating team rules and backup Kato Nelson is completing an underwhelming 49.5 percent of his passes. The fact that they often struggle to score doesn’t help as they get set to take on a Toledo team that averages 15.4 points per game more than they do.
The Rockets have also won two in a row behind quarterback Logan Woodside and their starting signal-caller has had a solid season by completing 65.2 percent of his passes with 24 TD strikes and a modest three interceptions. Toledo has gone a robust 7-1 over their last eight games, including their emphatic 37-10 beatdown of Western Michigan this past weekend as a 10.5-point home favorite and for me, they’re just too explosive offensively for Akron to keep up with.
While a surprising 55 percent of public bettors like the Zips to find a way to cover the chalk as nearly three-touchdown underdogs, I don’t and I’m going to urge you to back Toledo to get the huge win in this contest. Toledo beat Akron 48-21 at home on October 21 and while the Zips might have a better chance for revenge against their conference rivals playing on a neutral field, they’re not getting it!
The Rockets are a near-perfect 6-1 ATS in their last seven games and equally impressive 4-1 ATS in their last five neutral site games. Toledo has also gone 7-3 ATS in their last 10 meetings against the Zips and will are the easy pick for me to win this conference title tilt and cover the big spread!
Pick: Toledo -18
