Why Bet On Central Michigan to Beat #2 Michigan State (-26.5)

Central Michigan is undefeated against the spread this season.

Central Michigan has upset Michigan State straight up in the past. The Chippewas beat Michigan State in 2009 29 to 27 as a +14.5 point underdog. There is history between these two teams that implies that Central Michigan is going to put up a tough battle.

But, really, the chances of Central Michigan upsetting Michigan State are slim to none. Central Michigan just doesn’t have the team to deal with a squad as talented as Michigan State’s. What Central Michigan does have is the ability to cover spreads. The Chippewas are 1 and 2 straight up but 3 and 0 against the spread this season. They’ve lost 13 to 24 to Oklahoma State as a 21 point dog. They beat Monmouth 31 to 10 as a -20.5 point favorite. They lost to Syracuse 27 to 30 as +8 point dog.

Central Michigan has enough talent to keep this game under the 26.5 point spread. If Central Michigan just plays their game and doesn’t have too high of expectations, they should be able to stick with Michigan State for a while in this matchup.

Why Bet On #2 Michigan State (-26.5) to Beat Central Michigan

Beating the Chippewas won’t be enough for MSU to get to #1.

Michigan State’s defense is terrific, but the Spartans’ secondary has allowed teams to march up and down the field and put up points. Central Michigan should be able to score a few touchdowns in this game because the Chippewas offense is based on a good passing attack.

But it’s asking a lot for the Chippewas to defend against Michigan State’s offense. The Spartans’ offense has turned into one of the better units in college football. The Spartans’ balance on offense is what makes Michigan State so capable of outscoring teams. The Spartans only average 388.3 yards per game. But out of the 388 yards per game, Michigan State racks up 231.7 yards passing and 156.7 yards rushing. The Spartans have incredible balance. The offensive line is doing a good job of protecting QB Conner Cook and opening holes for RB Madre London.

With such a great offense, Michigan State is expected to destroy Central Michigan’s defense this Saturday. The problem with that theory is that Michigan State hardly ever plays a hurry up offense. That and the Spartans’ secondary could lead to a closer game than the against the spread odds indicate. I am picking the Michigan State Spartans to beat Central Michigan as the smart bet in this game. My final score prediction is Michigan State 45, Central Michigan 28.
