A Closer Look At The Best Week 1 College Football Odds

North Carolina Tar Heels vs South Carolina Gamecocks
Date: Thursday, September 3, 2015
Start Time: 6:00 PM ET
Location: Charlotte, NC
Stadium: Bank of America Stadium
Odds: South Carolina -2.5
Game Total: 64
Radio: North Carolina vs South Carolina
TV Info: ESPN
Stream: WatchESPN.com

South Carolina is always the favorite when these 2 teams meet, but this year, things should be different for North Carolina. QB Marquise Williams is a senior. Both of his top 2 wide receivers, Ryan Switzer and Mack Hollins are back and the entire offensive line has experience. Watch out for the Tar Heels.

TCU Horned Frogs vs Minnesota Golden Gophers
Date: Thursday, September 3, 2015
Start Time: 9:00 PM ET
Location: Minneapolis, MN
Stadium: TCF Bank Stadium
Odds: TCU -14
Game Total: 57.5
TV Info: ESPN
Stream:  Watch ESPN

This is not an easy first week matchup for a Top 5 team, TCU. TCU’s offense led by Heisman Trophy candidate Trevone Boykin faces a very good defensive team in Minnesota. TCU’s defense is pretty much brand new from last season’s unit. But, Boykin and the offense should score enough to get past the Golden Gophers in September, before the chilly winds and snow have had a chance to affect game play.

Baylor Bears vs SMU Mustangs
Date: Friday, September 4, 2015
Start Time: 7:00 PM ET
Location: Dallas, TX
Stadium: Gerald J. Ford Stadium
Odds: Baylor -34.5
Game Total: 74
Radio: Baylor vs SMU
TV Info: ESPN
Stream:  Watch ESPN

Baylor returns too many players on defense for SMU to score enough points to keep pace in this matchup. The Bears’ offensive line returns 3 starters while the QB situation is in good hands with Seth Russell who is a better rusher than Bryce Petty was. SMU should get pummeled.

Washington Huskies vs Boise State Broncos
Date: Friday, September 4, 2015
Start Time: 10:15 PM ET
Location: Boise, ID
Stadium: Bronco Stadium
Odds: Broncos -10.5
Game Total: 56.5
Radio: Washington vs Boise State
TV Info: ESPN
Stream:  Watch ESPN

Is Chris Petersen, who built the program at Boise State, regretting his decision to go to Washington? Probably not yet, but he might regret it after Boise State beats Washington with ease in Week 1. The Broncos are loaded on offense with 9 offensive starters returning. On defense, the Broncos return all but one defensive lineman. Washington isn’t ready to take on such an experienced team.

Stanford Cardinal vs Northwestern Wildcats
Date: Saturday, September 5, 2015
Start Time: 12:00 PM ET
Location: Boise, ID
Stadium: Bronco Stadium
Odds: Stanford -12
Game Total: 45
Radio: Stanford vs Northwestern
TV Info: ESPN
Stream:  Watch ESPN

Coach David Shaw might find his Cardinal team in a tough Week 1 battle against an underrated Northwestern team on the road. Stanford does return QB Kevin Hogan and rusher Chris McCaffrey should be better. The defense, even though Shaw has to replace a lot of players, should be solid. The Cardinal will win this game, but Northwestern could keep it close until the end.

BYU Cougars vs Nebraska Cornhuskers
Date: Saturday, September 5, 2015
Start Time: 3:30 PM ET
Location: Lincoln, NE
Stadium: Memorial Stadium
Odds: Nebraska -6.5
Game Total: 65
Radio: BYU vs Nebraska
TV Info: ABC
Stream:  Watch ESPN

This is a great Week 1 matchup. If BYU QB Taysom Hill returns to full strength, BYU’s offense is going to be great. Hill is a sneaky Heisman Trophy candidate who has all of the intangibles to go along with passing and rushing skills. BYU’s secondary could be an issue. But, can Nebraska, under new pro-style offense Coach Mike Riley, take advantage? QB Tony Armstrong Jr. is more of a rusher/passer than a pure passer and Riley has to rebuild the offensive line. BYU looks like the play.

Penn State Nittany Lions vs Temple Owls
Date: Saturday, September 5, 2015
Start Time: 3:30 PM ET
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Stadium: Lincoln Financial Field
Odds: Penn State -6.5
Game Total: 36
Radio: Penn State vs Temple
TV Info: ESPN
Stream:  Watch ESPN

Penn State could be a surprise team in the Big Ten this season. QB Chris Hackenberg gets to play behind an experienced offensive line. Hopefully, he won’t get sacked close to 44 times this season like he was sacked last season. The defense returns 3 starters in the secondary and the D-Line is solid. Temple returns 10 starters on defense, but the Owls appear overmatched in this game.

Virginia Cavaliers vs UCLA Bruins
Date: Saturday, September 5, 2015
Start Time: 3:30 PM ET
Location: Pasadena, CA
Stadium: Rose Bowl
Odds: UCLA -17
Game Total: 53.5
Radio: UVA vs UCLA
TV Info: FOX
Stream:  Fox Sports Go

Virginia’s offense returns enough offensive linemen with experience for the unit to be a factor. Unfortunately, there’s still a question as to who will play QB and who will start at RB. UCLA has a question at quarterback as well. Freshman Josh Rosen is the likely candidate to start since he played in a similar system during high school. The Bruins return all 5 starters on the offensive line and enough experience on defense to handle Virginia in this matchup.

Arizona State Sun Devils vs Texas A&M Aggies
Date: Saturday, September 5, 2015
Start Time: 7:00 PM ET
Location: Houston, TX
Stadium: NRG Stadium
Odds: Texas A&M -3
Game Total: 66.5
Radio: Arizona State vs Texas A&M
TV Info: ESPN
Stream:  Watch ESPN

Arizona State’s offense will be very good in this game, but the defense could be in a touch matchup. ASU’s D is based on blitzing the quarterback. That’s not a good thing versus A&M because the Aggies have who could be the next great A&M QB, if they start him, in Kyle Allen. Allen has all of the tools tear up the Sun Devils’ defense if he can get enough time from an offensive line that should be much better this season than it was last season. This game is being played at NRG Stadium in Houston, TX. That gives the Aggies an advantage as well.

Wisconsin Badgers at Alabama Crimson Tide
Date: Saturday, September 5, 2015
Start Time: 8:00 PM ET
Location: Arlington, TX
Stadium: AT&T Stadium
Odds: Alabama -10.5
Game Total: 53.5
TV: ABC
Stream: WatchESPN.com
Radio: Wisconsin vs Alabama

This is another game that comes down to a bad matchup. Wisconsin is a power rushing team that faces an Alabama defense with a big question regarding its secondary. Alabama’s defensive line is going to be one of the best in the nation. Alabama should shut down the Badgers’ rushing attack. Unless QB Joel Stave can get time and take advantage of ‘Bama’s secondary woes, the Tide should win this matchup.

Ohio State Buckeyes at Virginia Tech Hokies
Date: Monday, September 7, 2015
Start Time: 8:00 PM ET
Location: Blacksburg, VA
Stadium: Lane Stadium
Odds: Ohio State -11.5
Game Total: 53.5
TV: ESPN
Stream: WatchESPN
Radio: Ohio State vs Virginia Tech

Now that Braxton Miller has decided to play wide receiver instead of quarterback; the Buckeyes are looking like an even stronger team to repeat as National Champions. In fact, pencil in Ohio State into the College Football Playoff again. Virginia Tech will be an improved squad, but Ohio State should have no trouble winning this game.
