The USC Trojans host the Fresno State Bulldogs for the Las Vegas Bowl

College Football Betting Picks – USC To Continue Hot Streak Against UCLA

Whatever head coach Ed Orgeron is doing with his players at USC is working, because the Trojans have become a surprising force in college football betting since he took the headsets from Lane Kiffin. You can just tell that his players absolutely adore him, and it helps when he’s saying all the right things in the media. USC has gone 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS in their past five games, and re-established themselves in the BCS Standings when it looked like everything was going to go wrong yet again for one of the country’s most popular teams.

Nothing cemented USC’s place amongst the best schools out there more than their 20-17 victory over Stanford, but the oddsmakers will be the first to tell you that they saw it coming. The Cardinal were just -3.5 road favorites in that game. The reason is quite simple – USC is still one of the finest recruiting powers around, and this team has always been loaded with talent. They just needed the right leader and Orgeron seems to be the better man for the job.

USC will host the reeling Bruins, who suffered their third loss of the season when they were manhandled by the Sun Devils during a 33-38 loss as +3.0 home dogs. That line says as much about how good Arizona State is as it does about how shaky UCLA has been all year. They can put up points, but they are not a deep team. USC is giving up just 18.3 points against in their last five games and while Brent Hundley is certainly talented, he’s not the complete package NFL scouts think he is. He also lacks any semblance of a game changing supporting cast.

Hundley has thrown for 2,637 yards, rushed for another 507 and totaled 29 touchdowns this season. He’s a nifty play maker that has a nose for the endzone, but he has lacked that big breakout game. There have only been two games where he’s scored four touchdowns, and that’s still a big deal but it also says a lot about his ceiling. Outside of Arizona State and Stanford, the Pac-12 is littered with awful defensive fronts. If Hundley was as amazing as people hype him to be, he’d have more marquee performances to speak of.

The point is that defenses have been adjusting to Hundley more and more, and the Bruins defense is on the verge of pathetic. They’ve given up 30.7 points against in their last 6 games, and UCLA has stumbled in to a brutal 2-4 ATS record in those very matchups. The Bruins have gone from a must-bet team to a veritable college football betting pariah in the second half.

As UCLA has fallen from grace in the eyes of the gambling community, the Trojans have gained all sorts of momentum. They’re finally capitalizing on all the out-of-this-world talent that they have, and it’s all coming together at a time where they can still challenge for a relatively big bowl game. Coaching makes a big difference in football, especially at this level. If you ignore that simple fact when you lay down your cash in college football betting, you’re going to regret it.
