College Football Betting Preview Conference USA

The East Division is where it’s at because they have a team that many are predicting to go undefeated, Marshall. If Marshall does go undefeated, there is speculation that they will be the No. 1 ranked team outside of the five power conferences: the ACC, the Big 12, the Big Ten, the Pac 12 and the SEC.

Is Marshall really that good or will some other team in Conference USA find a way to upset their predicted undefeated season?

Florida Atlantic Owls – Question marks on the offensive line and a new head coach could spell doom for Florida Atlantic’s title dreams.

Florida International Golden Panthers – FI should be in the cellar of their division, the East where Marshall plays, again this season. Second year coach Ron Turner has a ton of things to address.

Marshall Thundering Herd – QB Rakeem Cato is a senior and the Thundering Herd return 13 overall starters from last season. If they play as well as they should, Marshall could earn a berth to one of the year’s top bowl games.

Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders – An easy schedule, they don’t play any of the top 3 teams from the West Division, could put the Blue Raiders within shouting distance of Marshall. It could. It probably won’t happen, but it could.

Old Dominion Monarchs – QB Taylor Heinicke will put points on the board for the Monarchs, but the defense is just awful. You only win football games if you score more than the other guy.

UAB Blazers – A lack of experience at QB could do the Blazers in shortly after the season starts. There are a lot of gunslingers in Conference-USA. UAB doesn’t have one of them.

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers – The Hilltoppers return only 2 starters on defense. That’s a big question mark. The offense should be decent, though. So, they could surprise some.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs – In Skip Holtz’s first season, the Bulldogs struggled some. They have a few holes along the offensive line and they don’t really have a quarterback. So, season two for Holtz shouldn’t be much better.

North Texas Mean Green – The offensive line is strong with four returning starters. Even though the Mean Green returns only four starters on defense, the West Division is much weaker than the East Division.

Rice Owls – They have to play Marshall on the road in a cross-divisional game, but Rice gets North Texas and UTSA, their two top rivals, at home. This team can win the West.

Southern Miss Golden Eagles – Sophomore QB Nick Mullens could improve this year to make the Golden Eagles a contender in the West Division.

UTEP Miners – The offense can put up points at times, but the defense should be horrendous. Expecting the Miners to even win more than their 2 game total from last season means that you’re expecting a lot.

UTSA Roadrunners – Larry Coker’s squad has 17 returning starters and won’t have to play Marshall in a cross-divisional game. The Roadrunners are a contender in the West like Rice and the North Texas Mean Green.

Conference-USA Championship Game Prediction: Rice vs. Marshall

Rice, because they play their top two rivals at home in the West Division, North Texas and UTSA , should be able to take home the divisional title.

It may be a short celebration, however, because they’ll have to play Marshall in the championship; the one team in the non-power conferences that could score a major bowl berth.

Marshall should put a hurt onto every team that they face in Conference-USA this season. Rice should have no shot against the Herd in the Conference-USA Championship Game.

Pick: Marshall Thundering Herd
