College Football Rivalry Week Upset Picks

There are some awesome matchups during 2014’s Rivalry week in college football. Because of that, football handicappers should have no trouble finding some great upset picks against the spread this week.

The first game pits Nebraska against Iowa in a Big Ten battle. Notre Dame travels to Southern California to take on USC and Florida battles Florida State in a game that could determine FSU’s College Football Playoff fate.

Analyzing My College Football Rivalry Week Upset Picks

No. 23 Nebraska Cornhuskers at Iowa Hawkeyes
When:  Friday, Nov. 28 at 12:00 pm ET
TV: ABC
Betting Line: Iowa -1.5

Analysis: Iowa played about as well as one would expect when losing to Wisconsin 24 to 26. The Hawkeyes were in the game until the end. But Iowa allowed Melvin Gordon to rush for 200 yards.

That’s a terrible sign since they face a Nebraska team that’s ranked fifteenth in rushing yards per game at 256.2 and averages 453.8 yards per contest. Nebraska also plays very well on the road going 3 and 1 against the spread this season. The Cornhuskers defense isn’t very good this season, but it should be effective against the Hawkeyes who only go for 332 yards and 23 points per game.

Nebraska has gone 0-3-1 against the spread in their last 4 games. They’re due to turn it around and if they continually feed running back Ameer Abdullah in this game, they should upset the Hawkeyes straight up on Saturday.

Rivalry Week Upset Pick: Nebraska +1.5

Notre Dame Fighting Irish at No. 19 USC Trojans
When:  Saturday, Nov. 29 at 3:30 pm ET
TV:  FOX
Betting Line: USC -7

Analysis: Notre Dame has lost 3 games in a row to ASU, Northwestern and Louisville. Why would anybody think that the Fighting Irish could stick with USC?

Football handicappers have to be thinking that after watching USC implode on the football field against rival UCLA this past Saturday. In a game that figured to be much closer than it was, the Trojans just gave up in the first half. They could do nothing against a Bruins’ defense that has been stung many times this season by less than stellar teams.

The Fighting Irish haven’t looked good at all in its last 3 matchups, but it did put up 28 points against Louisville’s very good defense and USC could very well suffer the after effects of such a stunning beat down at the hands of UCLA. 7 points is just too many to give up in this game. Take the against the spread dog that is 4 and 1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.

Rivalry Week Upset Pick: Notre Dame +7

Florida Gators at No. 3 Florida State Seminoles
When:  Saturday, Nov. 29 at 3:30 pm ET
TV:  ESPN
Betting Line: Florida State -9

Analysis: 6 and 4 Florida isn’t a great team by any stretch of the imagination, but the Gators are a decent team. More importantly, Florida has won 3 out of its last 4 straight up and is 3 and 1 against the spread in its last 4 games. This includes a marvelous 38 to 20 victory over Georgia.

Florida State has looked like crap lately. The Seminoles are 1 and 5 against the spread at home this season and barely beat Boston College last week while taking on the Eagles at home as a -17 point favorite.

Florida might be the best team that Florida State has faced since battling a healthy Notre Dame team on Oct. 18. The Gators would like nothing more than to end their in-state rivals shot at a second straight National Championship. In any case, it’s hard to see the Seminoles covering such a tough spread.

Rivalry Week Upset Pick: Florida +9
