College Football Week 1 Free Picks

The 2016-2017 College Football Season is here and for the first week of action, I’ve chosen 3 games that should yield a profit for those college gridiron handicappers who are betting in Week 1.

Who’s the play when Maryland heads to Austin to battle the Texas Longhorns? Will 3 Florida State or 1 Alabama come up huge in Week 1’s most important match up? Can UCLA exact revenge over Texas A&M for last year’s loss?

Check out my College Football Week 1 Free Picks!

Maryland at #23 Texas
When:  Saturday, Sept. 2 at 12:00 pm ET
Where: Royal Texas Memorial Stadium, Austin, TX
TV: FS1
Odds: Texas -17

Analysis: Tom Herman takes over Texas’ football program after bringing the Houston Cougars back to prominence. The first move Herman made was to hire Houston defensive coordinator Todd Orlando. Orlando is the first D-coordinator in Texas’ history that the school is paying $1 million a year to.

Orlando’s worth it. Former coach Charlie Strong recruited well. Strong’s issue was getting his players to step it up on game day. Herman should have no such problems. The Longhorns return their starting RB, QB, and best WR. They also return 4 starters along the offensive line.

That sounds like plenty for Herman to work with. Not only that, but Orlando’s defense could be the best in the run and gun Big 12.

Maryland, who is 0-6 ATS in their last 6 road games, should be in trouble.

Pick: Texas -17

#3 Florida State vs #1 Alabama
When:  Saturday, Sept. 2 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, GA
TV: ABC
Odds: Florida State +7

Analysis: I like Alabama to win the SEC without any issues. The problem I have is that for the first time in a long time coach Nick Saban must replace NFL caliber players along his defensive line.

Alabama’s offense should be set. The defense? It might take a game or two for the D-line to come together. Because of that, I’m partial to backing Florida State in this game. 7 points is a lot to give to a talented quarterback like Deondre Francois.

The Seminoles should keep this one close enough to win it against the spread. No matter which team you back as a fan, don’t worry. I’ve got the feeling these two faces off against each other in the College Football Playoff at the end of the season.

Pick: Florida State ATS

Texas A&M at UCLA
When:  Sunday, Sept. 3 at 9:30 pm ET
Where: Rose Bowl, Pasadena, CA
TV: FOX
Odds: UCLA -4

Analysis: Texas A&M beat UCLA 31 to 24 last season. Although Texas A&M must replace Myles Garrett on defense, UCLA must replace 3 players on defense at all 3 levels who are now in the NFL.

So, that’s the dilemma in Pasadena. If the Bruins couldn’t stop A&M’s offense last season with Takkarist McKinley, Jayon Brown, and Fabian Moreau, how are they going to stop A&M’s offense this season without those 3 guys?

I don’t think the Bruins are. I just don’t feel UCLA is a good enough team to beat an SEC squad like the Texas A&M Aggies. It helps that the Aggies are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games in September.

I think A&M wins straight up.

Pick: Texas A&M SU
