A Closer Look At College Football Week 1’s Must Bet Games

North Carolina Tar Heels at South Carolina Gamecocks

The South Carolina Gamecocks (7-6 SU, 7-6 ATS) will look to rebound from their first six-loss season since 2009 when they host the North Carolina Tar Heels (6-7 SU, 5-8 ATS) in an interstate rivalry on September 3, but I like the big upset in this opener.

After recording a whopping 42 victories between 2010 and 2013, head coach Steve Spurrier has several areas he needs to address starting with the question of who will be the team’s new starting quarterback in 2015.

Sophomore Connor Mitch (6-3, 210) is slated to start right now, but he’s thrown just six career passes. Recruits, Perry Orth (6-1, 212) and Michael Scarnecchia (6-4, 201) will both have a shot to unseat Mitch this spring, but the fact of the matter is that no one knows right now how good any of the three signal-callers will actually be this coming season. The Gamecocks return seven starters on offense and eight on defense.

North Carolina returns a whopping 10 starters on offense, including athletically-gifted quarterback Marquise Williams. The Tar Heels averaged a stellar 33.2 points per game last season and can score the ball with any team in the country. Unfortunately, they also allowed a whopping 39.0 points per game defensively under offensive-minded head coach Larry Fedora.

Still, I’m picking the Heels to take down the Gamecocks in this Week 1 matchup, seeing as how South Carolina averaged 26.9 points pr game a year ago while allowing 28.8 per game defensively. Marquise Williams should be the difference in this one people!

Michigan Wolverines at Utah Utes
Date: Thursday September 3, 2015
Start Time: 8:30 PM ET
Location: Salt Lake City, UT
Stadium: Rice-Eccles Stadium
Spread: Utah -3

The Michigan Wolverines (5-7 SU, 5-7 ATS) return nine starters on offense and eight on defense but the fact of the matter is that they’re going to look and play like an entirely different team than they had previously been with former Stanford and San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh taking over at his beloved alma mater.

Still, Harbaugh has a ton of questions he needs to answer starting with who’s going to play quarterback. Will it be Shane Morris, the team’s most experienced signal-caller or will he be supplanted by hopefuls, Alex Malzone, Zach Gentry or Wilton Speight?

The good news for Harbaugh’s Maize and Blue squad is that they have a defense that looks like it could be one of the best in the country in no time at all after allowing just 22.1 points per game last season.

Nevertheless, I’m going to urge you to back the Utah to win this contest seeing as how the Utah Utes (9-4 SU, 9-4 ATS) won nine games a year ago in their best season since joining the Pac-12and have an elite running back in junior college transfer Devontae Booker, a player that had a stunning season a year ago by falling just short of the school record with 1,512 rushing yards.

Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham commented on his program’s progress. “We’ve taken a step forward every year with our depth and talent on the roster, one through 85,” he says. “It’s still a work in progress … but we feel like last year we made a lot of headway.”

With eight returning starters on offense and defense, the more experienced Utah Utes are the pick to win and cash in against the rebuilding Michigan Wolverines and a team I believe will at least contend for a division title in the powerful Pac-12.

Washington Huskies at Boise State Broncos

Boise State (12-2 SU, 8-6 ATS) had a very successful first season under new head coach Bryan Harsin and the Broncos return 10 starters on offense and eight more on defense in 2015.

The Broncos are also one of the most consistent college football winners in recent memory, having lost two or more games one once in the last seven seasons, though most all of that came under their former head coach.

Boise State boasts a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate in gifted running back Jay Ajayi and a defense that features four All-Conference selections from last season.

The Washington Huskies (8-6 SU, 7-7ATS) also had a fantastic first season under former Boise State head coach Chris Petersen, the man that put the Broncos on the national map in the first place.

Petersen changed the culture in Washington very quickly last season and turned the perennial doormat into a legitimate contender. The Huskies will have a new starting quarterback this coming season, but they’ve also got a big-time running back in Dwayne Washington and I believe they’re going to lean heavily on him while getting the upset road win for Petersen in his return to Boise . Call this contest a matchup of the teacher schooling the former student.
