College Football Week 1 Upset Picks
#2 Ohio State at Indiana
When: Thursday, August 31 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Memorial Stadium, Bloomington, IN
Odds: Indiana +21
Analysis: I think Ohio State is overrated. The Buckeyes have lost plenty of players in the past couple of seasons. I’m not sure why everybody is so excited about Urban Meyer’s squad going into the 2017-2018 College Football Season.
Sure, Indiana is 2 and 5 ATS in their last 7 conference games. The Hoosiers are also 2 and 5 ATS in their last 7 home games. But, Ohio State hasn’t covered a spread versus the Indiana Hoosiers in the last 6 games between these 2 teams.
21 points are a lot to give up to a team that always plays you tough. I just don’t like Ohio State to win this game by more than 14 to 16 points. I’m backing Indiana against the spread.
Pick: Indiana ATS
#11 Michigan vs #17 Florida
When: Saturday, Sept. 2 at 3:30 pm ET
Where: AT&T Stadium, Arlington, TX
Odds: Florida +3.5
Analysis: This is one of College Football Week 1’s highlight games. Michigan Coach Jim Harbaugh has recruited well. The only problem is that Harbaugh must replace 9 starters from last year’s excellent defense. Michigan’s offensive line must also prove that it can handle an SEC defensive line. The Wolverines gave up way too many behind the line tackles towards the end of last season.
All of Michigan’s changes should lead to a Florida straight up win in Texas on Sept. 2. Coach Jim McElwain had to suspend some players for this game. I’m still not worried. The Gators have 3 quarterbacks that could end up starting under center: Felipe Franks, Luke Del Rio, and Malik Zaire.
I’d like to see Zaire start because he got a bad deal at Notre Dame. But, it might be hard for McElwain to leave 6’ 6” freshman Franks on the pine. Either way, Florida’s QB should take apart Michigan’s inexperienced defense.
I think the Gators beat the Wolverines straight up.
Pick: Florida SU
Appalachian State at #15 Georgia
When: Saturday, Sept. 2 at 6:15 pm ET
Where: Sanford Stadium, Athens, GA
Odds: Georgia -13.5
Analysis: They’re going crazy in Athens because Georgia supposedly has a team that could challenge Alabama and LSU for the SEC Championship. I don’t believe Georgia beats Appalachian State on Sept. 2
I’m crazy, right? Not really. App State returns it’s starting QB, it’s starting RB, it’s best WR, and the best offensive line in the Sun Belt Conference. The defense is also stacked since there’s experience on the line, in the linebacking corps, and in the secondary.
App State is no joke. I’ll take a senior laden team like Appalachian State over the overrated Bulldogs any day of the week. I just don’t see how Georgia improves from their desperate 2016-2017 against a team that’s used to winning.
App State pulls off the massive straight up upset.
Pick: Appalachian State SU
