College Football Week 3 High/Low Scoring Games

Syracuse at Pittsburgh

North Carolina is one of the better teams in the ACC. But, the Orange scored just 6 points in the 6-31 Week 2 loss. They amassed 202 total yards. Pittsburgh beat Austin Peay 55-0. Syracuse’s defense should contain Pittsburgh’s offense, think 28 points instead of 31. The Orange offense could end up with less than double-digits again. This one projects to be a low-scoring battle.

Louisiana at Georgia State

The Ragin’ Cajuns’ 31-14 domination of Iowa State shows how far some of the mid-level FCS teams have come. The Ragin Cajuns don’t figure to let up against a Georgia State squad that managed 17 points against Wyoming. That doesn’t mean this isn’t a high-scoring game. Louisiana’s offense could post 50 or more against the Panthers.

Appalachian State at Marshall

Appalachian State beat Charlotte 35-20. Marshall beat Eastern Kentucky 59-0. The Thundering Herd won’t keep the Mountaineers off the scoreboard. On the flip side, Marshall score as well. We’re looking at a game that could break 70 unless one or both of the defenses step it up.

Florida Atlantic at Georgia Southern

Georgia Southern barely escaped Campbell 27-26. Florida Atlantic has yet to play this season. So far, Lane Kiffin has developed a decent program. FAU put 52 points onto SMU in their 52-28 bowl game victory. Florida Atlantic could get the over by themselves.

Troy at Middle Tennessee

On Sep. 12, Army dominated Middle Tennessee State 40-0. Troy won’t punish Middle Tennessee by that score. But the game should still be high-scoring. The Trojans averaged 33.8 last season while allowing 34.8. Middle Tennessee averaged over 400 yards in 2019. They’ll put points on the board on Sep. 18. Expect the Blue Raiders offense to look nothing like the one against the Black Knights, which points to a high scoring game.

SMU at North Texas

North Texas racked up 721 yards against Houston Baptist in their 57-31 win. Southern Methodist beat Texas State 31-24. When it comes to these types of battles, a team from a well-regarded conference like the AAC against a squad like North Texas, the distance between the two programs have closed. North Texas should beat SMU, so consider the Mean Green a viable ATS pick. They should also do it in a high-scoring contest.

LA Tech at Southern Miss

Southern Miss scored just 21 points in a 21-32 loss versus South Alabama on Sep. 3. Louisiana Tech beat Miami 14-0 in their bowl game on Feb. 26. The Bulldogs averaged 34 points last season. In 2020, both these teams have strong defenses, though. This should be a low-scoring affair.
