College Football Week 9 Upset Picks

How many people picked Arizona State over Stanford? Or the West Virginia Mountaineers college football upset pick over the Baylor Bears?

Not many considering both winning teams were home field underdogs.

Notre Dame’s upset hopes in Tallahassee were dashed by the second half heroics of Jameis Winston or a blown call by the refs depending on which side you bet on Saturday night.

Let’s shift focus to my upcoming week 9 college football upset picks. Although I list the point spreads, my picks are straight up NCAAF week 9 money line winners.

College Football Week 9 Upset Picks

No. 22 West Virginia Mountaineers at Oklahoma State Cowboys
When:  Saturday, Oct. 25 at 3:30 pm ET
TV: ESPN
Betting Line:  West Virginia +3

Analysis: West Virginia is the ranked team, but Oklahoma State is the favorite. Why not? The home team has done very well in these important, tough, Big 12 matchups.
West Virginia knows that for sure since it’s the Mountaineers that ended Baylor’s chances at a spot in the College Football Playoffs in Week 8.

The Mountaineers are just a good team. QB Clint Trickett leads an offense that averages 538.4 yards per game.

Look, every football handicapper out there knows that this game should be close. Oklahoma State isn’t just going to lie down and die at home, but in a close game, why not go for the money line upset by backing the ranked opponent?

Week 9 Upset Pick: West Virginia Mountaineers

No. 3 Ole Miss Rebels at No. 23 LSU Tigers
When:  Saturday, Oct. 25 at 7:15 pm ET
TV:  ESPN
Betting Line:  LSU +3

Analysis: 7 and 0 Mississippi State is also undefeated against the spread going 6-0-1 ATS so far this season. They have a proven senior QB in Bo Wallace and the defense is one of the best in the nation. The defense at Ole Miss allows only 290.6 overall yards, 97.1 rushing yards and roughly 10 points on average per game.

There’s no reason to believe that Ole Miss won’t perform at a high level when they take on LSU in Death Valley this Saturday. But, and it’s sort of a big one, LSU is 5 and 1 ATS in their last 6 home games. They’re also 6 and 2 in their last 8 games overall and have found their footing after a 30 to 27 road victory over Florida and a 41 to 3 shellacking of Kentucky.

The Rebels take a slight step back in their quest for a spot in the College Football Playoffs with a loss at LSU in Week 9 is my guess.

Week 9 Upset Pick: LSU Tigers

Oregon State Beavers at Stanford Cardinal
When:  Saturday, Oct. 25 at 3:30 pm ET
TV:  ESPN 2
Betting Line:  Stanford -13.5

Analysis: I’m definitely going out on a limb with this money line bet. Stanford is a woeful 3 and 4 ATS this season. They’re straight up record of 4 and 3 isn’t very good either and the Cardinal gave up an uncharacteristic 26 points to ASU in a 10 to 26 loss in Week 8. But they’re a better team than Oregon State.

Oregon State fell behind tough Utah before taking the Utes into 2 overtimes.

Unfortunately for the Beavers, they’re the ones who ended up falling 23 to 29 in one of the better games in Week 8. Beavers are 4 and 2 straight up and they play with a lot of heart and fire. They’re also 4 and 1 ATS in their last 5 road games versus a team with a winning home record. Why not take that ATS record further and go for the Beavers to upset Stanford straight up?

Week 9 Upset Pick: Oregon State Beavers
