Analyzing My Early College Bowl Upset Alert Picks

Fiesta Bowl
No. 20 Boise State Broncos vs. No 10 Arizona Wildcats
Date: Dec. 31, 2014
Start Time: 4 p.m. ET
Location: Glendale, Arizona
Stadium: University of Phoenix Stadium
TV Info: ESPN
Stream Info: WatchESPN.com
Radio:  Arizona Vs  Boise State
Point Spread: Wildcats -3
Game Total: N/A

Analysis: Arizona looked about as bad as any team in college football in the Pac-12 Championship. There was nothing that the Wildcats could to keep Marcus Mariotta and the Oregon Ducks from lighting up the ‘Cats to the tune of 51 to 13.

Arizona is definitely much improved from year’s past. The team is solid, but it no doubt is going to be feeling the after effects of the beat down that it took at the hands of the Oregon Ducks. The Wildcats could come out flat and if they do, Boise State might run away with this one straight up and not just against the spread.

Boise State lost only 2 games this season. The first was in Week 1 to Ole Miss and the Broncos were actually in that game until late in the third quarter. The second loss, the inexcusable one, ws to Air Force. Outside of those two losses, the Broncos have been terrific. They’ve dominated the teams that they’ve played in their last 3 matchups and they absolutely destroyed BYU 55 to 30 early on in the season.

The Broncos appear ready to roll while Arizona might not be ready to play on Dec. 31.

Early College Bowl Upset Alert Pick: Boise State +4

Cotton Bowl
No. 5 Baylor Bears vs No. 8 Michigan State
Date: Jan. 01, 2015
Start Time: 12:30 p.m. ET
Location: Arlington, Texas
Stadium: AT&T Stadium
TV Info: ESPN
Stream Info: WatchESPN.com
Radio:  Baylor Vs  Michigan State
Point Spread: Bears -2.5
Game Total: 70

Analysis: Baylor played about as well as can be expected when beating Kansas State 38 to 27 as a 7 point favorite. Kansas State is an exceptionally talented team. It shows that Baylor is definitely one of the ten best teams in the nation.

But, Baylor really isn’t as good as Michigan State. The Spartans could have beaten Oregon, if the defense hadn’t fallen apart in the second half, and probably should have beaten Ohio State. Both of those teams are in the College Football Playoff. Michigan State dominated every other team that it faced during the regular season.

The Spartans are used to stepping it up on neutral fields. Michigan State is 5 and 0 in their last 5 neutral site games. Yes, Baylor will be playing in front of a lot of their fans, this is the Cotton Bowl, but the Spartans might just be too good for the Bears to handle.

Early College Bowl Upset Alert Pick: Michigan State +3

Peach Bowl
No. 6 TCU Horned Frogs vs No. 9 Ole Miss Rebels
Date: Dec. 31, 2014
Start Time: 12:00 p.m. ET
Location: Atlanta , Georgia
Stadium:Georgia Dome
TV Info: ESPN
Stream Info: WatchESPN.com
Radio:  TCU Vs  Ole Miss
Point Spread: Frogs -3
Game Total: 70

Poor TCU had to end up sharing the Big 12 title with Baylor because Baylor beat them and the two teams finished at 8 and 1 in the conference. It was sort of silly when you think about it because Baylor beat TCU. Shouldn’t Baylor have been the team in the CFP ahead of TCU?

In any case, Ohio State was so awesome against Wisconsin that neither Baylor nor TCU made it to the CFP. Now, TCU takes on an Ole Miss squad that up until a month ago were ranked in the Top 4. Ole Miss stubbed its toes against Arkansas in a 0 to 30 loss, but the Rebels came back with fire in their final game of the season, a 31 to 17 victory over Mississippi State.

Ole Miss’ defense is allowing less than 14 points per game. Because TCU’s defense has a tendency to play soft, the Rebels could probably win this game straight up if they hold the Horned Frogs to 30. Expect TCU to find out how they really play defense in the SEC in the 2014 Peach Bowl.

Early College Bowl Upset Alert Pick: Ole Miss +3.5
